I play with a guy sometimes who hits from the senior tees. hes like 57. But he has a really hard time getting the ball in the air. Most of his shots especially approach shots just dribble agaisnt the ground like 150-160 yards up to the green and he has a really good short game. He usually comes close to my score which is kinda funny since he cant get the ball airborne. Hes learned to play by hitting skidders and from the red tees. Anyone play with players like this?

A couple of my friends dribble most of their way to hole but they do have their moments where they play some holes like a normal bogey golfer. Their scores are nowhere near mine, can't imagine a dribbler having a good short game since their either hitting fat/thin shots and that doesn't work well around the green either.

I've not met anyone who hits nothing but those shots, but they are not hard to come by. Mostly a result of topping the ball, trying to scoop or lift the ball in the air.

Never played with someone who does it all the time. I've hit them before and I've made pars from a shot that never really got off the ground. Its not that hard to do. Just a brain fart away in the middle of a swing.

yea, i would say his stock shot is the ball going in the air (linedrive)for about 100 yards and then hitting the ground with tons of roll. its from his weight being too far back and hitting up on the ball or just thinning the shot. Ive watched his left foot come completely off the ground on the backswing and he doesnt transfer enough weight on the followthrough.

well the red tees are usually very close to bodies of water so you only need to carry about 150 yards with a driver to get over it. Most of the time he really tries to get over it and it will land right after the water. But theres actually not any holes with water that we have played. The only one I played with him is when the senior tees is right up to the edge of the water and you have to hit the ball about 130 to carry the water.

im pretty sure I could really help his swing by some S&T principles. First I would have him leave most of his weight on his front foot and I would hold the grip of a club on the side of his head (ala Tiger) so he wouldnt sway back but stay centererd. That alone would help his swing a ton.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
