The formula is simple.....take the amount you spend on equipment each year and take three quarters of that and spend it on lessons with a PGA professional...and preferably an S&T instructor

Buy a Casio FS-10 and teach yourself. Best part of a coach is having eyes on you, with a slow-motion camera you can be your own eyes, then it's just up to you to understand the perfect golf swing.

Check out the evolvr lessons mentioned here and at the golf evolution site. You send in a swing vid and get feedback, and so forth. I think it's $39 or so? I'll be doing it in the spring when the snow melts. You'll need a decent camera.

Another vote for the Casio FS10 ($100 on Amazon) and the V1 Home software download ($39). Also, buy a book or two, but not just any book. Most are full of BS in my opinion. Research carefully what book to buy. By far the best I have read is Bobby Clampett's "The Impact Zone" ($17 on Amazon). Many good reviews in the reading room sub-forum here on several different books.

As for S&T, read up on that before deciding. It is popular with many, but not so much with others. Lots of threads here and elsewhere about it. Point being, research that thoroughly and decide if it is for you.

Post video (210 fps) of your swing here, read what you can, practice, and monitor your changes and improvements. That is my suggestion to someone wanting to improve without paying for lessons.

I am frugal by nature and nurture. Here's what I recommend for under $150.

step one: You probably know the ball flight laws, but read the thread on thesandtrap.com if you're not sure

free--watch videos on youtube and thesandtrap.com

$25. Get used copies of Ben Hogan's Five Lessons, Stan Utley's Short game books, and the S&T; book (the S&T; book has lots of good information on the swing and how to correct you're ball flight regardless of whether you adopt the entire S&T; swing)
I haven't read Clampett's book, but I've seen videos on youtube about the impact zone book and DVD.

$60 kodak ZX-1 might not be as good as the Casio, but it's cheaper http://www.buy.com/prod/kodak-zx1-hd...210930917.html

Post recorded DTL and FO videos here at this website (free) and upload them to evolvr.com for the best price on quality instruction. http://evolvr.thegolfevolution.com/plans

    • Could someone more knowledgeable than I am explain exactly what Justin Rose is trying to feel/achieve with that exaggerated pre shot swing routine of his? It looks like he's trying to get his hands and arms to move down before he starts his rotation, but I'm sure that's not it
    • Yes.  Did he not hit the range before the round? When my first few pre-round drives aren't what I expect, the first thing I check is my driver settings, in case they changed.  I am on my second adjustable driver and I am still not trusting that golf gremlins don't change it between rounds. The second thing I check is my alignment and setup, and that is far more often the culprit than my settings. In any case, there are some simple things that I imagine should be on a professional player's pre-round checklist that I am surprised when they aren't.  One of those is the settings for any adjustable clubs.
    • It was also set at B1 at a previous event, and… so there's dubiousness around whether he's telling the truth (again).
