I've had a little trouble getting my 904f up out of the rough as of late when I miss the fairway off the tee box on par 5s. Any suggestion on how to play it in your stance to get it out of the longer stuff? The winter weather has been kinda wet here in Ohio lately too so that may play a factor. Eventually I'm thinking of getting a hybrid 585 2i equivalent but at the moment, my best option for the distance is my 3 wood so I'm hoping one of you can give me tips.

I thought I was responding to myself, based on the bag you carry. It's an updated version of me. It is quite possible you are a better golfer than I so if this doesn't apply, take it with a grain of salt (then a Tequila and a lime).

Playing a 3-wood depends on how much hay you're trying to hack out of. Don't attempt a long second out of too much grass. An 8-iron to the fairway is better than a 3-wood to the deep woods. Plus, wet rough is more difficult to handle than the dry variety. That might be throwing you off. If the ball is sitting down in damp rough pick a 7-iron over a 3-wood.

It you have a relatively good lie, put the ball back in your stance a little (one ball) and swing normally. It'll create a little more downward strike and you might find the ball pops out a little easier. Careful the weeds don't grab the hosel so that you end up with a pull hook.

Peace.

Jeff

Thanks for the tip, it'll be helpful. Laying up with a mid iron is the smarter play anyways and leave me with a nice pitch to the green...and btw...there is no way your a better golfer than me. I just started this summer. Yes, I have come along quite well and have enjoyed a steady, rapid progress. I play with the irons that I have because I want good feedback on my swings, I feel it will make me a better player in the long run.

How do you like the 8 degrees of bounce on your 58 degree lob wedge? I wish I would've gone with 4 degree of bounce for my 60 so I could pick it easier from tighter fairway lies. Its good from the longer stuff but not what I'm looking for from the fairway.

And I'll pass on the Tequilla with lime! Every time I shoot some at the bar I end up tasting it all of the next day randomly. When I eat lunch or dinner I start wondering if someone poured some Cuervo into my food. Disgusting!

I recently took the 3 wood out of my bag as it is just too problematical to hit unless it is sitting up well on a level deck . . . and the courses i play rarely give that option to me.

Hitting it out of the rough is going to be an adventure for sure. It takes power to do it, we see Woods or Nicklaus doing it well but they really bring it like nobody's business. You have to rip it out of there with a mighty stroke. I don't think there is any sure fire technique to it other than power coupled with a bit of precision.

I like to hit a 5-wood out of the rough. Depending on the lie, I can get up to 225 or so of carry. I played with a 585H 19 degree and the 5-wood plays better out of the rough for me that the 585H did with more carry and better trajectory (no fliers). It may be the smaller head (heel to toe) or that it's a longer club. Either way, I'd recommend spending money on a 5-wood vs. a 585H.

    • Day 3:  I tried to hit a bucket at the range but an 80 year old man (he told me his age, showed me his knee replacement scars, told me all about his chronic low back pain, etc) couldn’t pass up the opportunity to mansplain to me every little thing I’m doing wrong.  Dude, it’s my third frickin day.  I know I need to twist my hips more, I know I need to keep my head/chest down and not pop up, I know I need to hit through the ball and follow through further, yada yada yada.  I know.  That’s exactly what I’m trying to work on.  How about you tell me or show me how to do those things instead of telling me to watch Iron Byron videos?  Rough day.
    • Day 132: 5/7/24 Full Speed Spectrum Training session 8/24. 7th training program overall.    Another slow session but 4 mph faster than my last session, which was my slowest ever. Going to the doctor on Friday to check on pulled neck muscle.
    • Day 26: Did full swing practice after work. First 15 balls were working on top of the backswing feel, and then tried to incorporate transition feel into the next 15 balls. A's, although this will be my last season of being a fan as they leave for Las Vegas (by way of Sacramento for a few seasons). Hard to see myself rooting for the Giants, but if that's the only MLB in the Bay Area, I guess I might get on board.
    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
