Swing checkpoints (P1-P9) for a square/slightly in to out 1 plane swing

IF ANYONE SEES SOMETHING THAT'S INCORRECT OR MISSING FEEL FREE TO CORRECT ME AS I KNOW I DON'T KNOW NEARLY AS MUCH AS I WANT TO KNOW.


Note: My picture angles aren't ideal at the moment (actually pretty bad, slightly right of down the line and too low to the ground and not zoomed back far enough), but once I get a good high fps camera I'll do it better. I used an iPhone video camera then uploaded the video to my computer and took a picture of the stilled video. Then uploaded those. That's why the quality is so bad.

Swing Checkpoints P1-P9


P2 (Club shaft parallel to ground)

Deep hands and hands on plane: Hands over the zipper
Club face square to the plane: Leading edge parallel to spine inclination to the ground
Shaft square to the plane: Grip IDEALLY pointing down the target line. However, it is much better to have the grip pointing toward your zipper (meaning a club head slightly outside the hands) than pointing to the right of the target line or a grip angled away from the zipper (a club head inside the hands)


Quick checkpoint: This position will be correct if a tiny circle will be able to be drawn around your club head, hands and zipper. Because of the camera angle it appears the club head is inside the hands (on mine not Charlies, his camera angle is ideal). These pictures are just place holders for later.



1. Charlies lead edge appears to be quite closed relative to his inclination to the ground.
2. If I understand correctly, a square to the plane face would be a leading edge parallel to the player's inclination to the ground. This line also shows that at P2 the left arm is parallel to the inclination to the ground.
3. Charlies inclination to the ground.
4. Relatively small circle around hands, zipper area, and club face ensure your hands are deep quickly and on the shaft plane where they should be at p2.





P3 (Left arm parallel to ground)


Deep hands and hands on shaft plane: Lead arm passes through bottom/middle of bicep
Club face square to the plane: Leading edge parallel to spine inclination to the ground
Shaft square to plane: ??

1. Charlies inclination to the ground.
2. Charlies leading edge almost perfectly parallel to his inclination to the ground (ideal position)
3. Small circle around hands, elbow and lower/mid portion of bicep ensure hands that are on deep and on plane.





P4 (Top of back swing)

Deep hands and hands on plane: Lead arm parallel to shoulder inclination and hands pass through top of bicep/base of shoulder and are not hovering over the bicep but deeper past it. The left wrist should be hovering over the top of bicep/base of shoulder.
Club face square to the plane: ???
Club shaft square to plane:


1. Charlies shoulder inclination.
2. Left arm parallel to shoulder inclination passing through top of bicep/base of shoulder.
3. Small circle around hands but not bicep (because they are above them) ensures the hands have moved correctly up to the elbow plane where they should be at P4.
4. Not sure if this is relevant or not, but his leading edge is almost parallel to the ground pointing right of his target. To me it looks like its pointing at those bunkers just left of the 4 at the end of the green line.

Also, noticed Charlies shaft/left arm angle appears to be only around 70 degrees, if that. He surely isn't wrist cocking as much as he can (I don't think), so maybe he is try to feather an additional club or something. I don't know. That's why I am writing it down, I don't want to forget to find out.





P5 (lead arm parallel on the downswing)

Deep hands and hands on plane:





P6 (club shaft parallel on the downswing)


At P4 shooting DTL, it looks like top of bicep due to the camera angle. However, if shot from perpendicular to the bicep at P4, the hands are closer to the middle of the bicep.

edit: actually he said at P4 It's in line with the shoulder inclination.

    • This is pretty interesting. I don't have a Stack radar so I can't use the app, but given what they say it should be fairly easy to come up with some kind of proxy to it if I spend an hour with a trackman. Just note what ball speed gives what distances and plot it. It's presumably not directly linear, but if you hit 50 shots between 30 and 100 yards, you'll have enough to pin down most yardages in that window (yards vs ball speed). Then rather than trying to match distances, just try to match ball speeds with whatever radar you do have. The whole strokes gained thing would be more difficult, but that's not really necessary to work on it. Or just buy a Stack radar...
    • I don't think that is what the study was showing. It just showed that golfers who spent less time over the ball performed better. It didn't say pending their normal pace.

    • Rush or delay your own pace and you are probably going to suffer in the long run. PGA pro are well oiled machines that work on an specific pace, it's not surprise that if you move them out of their normal routine things are going to go sideways. I normally don't rush shots, but I sometimes delay the trigger if I'm not feeling it. The result is a lack of athleticism, I kind of get a little stiff and I could loose some yards and accuracy.
