Finally broke 40 today on 9 holes ( wish i had more time to play all 18)

Here's the stats.

FIR - 7/7

GIR - 4/9

Putts - 14

Scram - 3/5

Score - 38

Par 36 course 3100 yards

I was even going into the last hole and double bogeyed it for a 38.  Oh well... Still happy about breaking 40 :)

This statistic is really true! ( to break 80 you have to hit 10/18 GIR, and putt no more than 32 times.)

Started keeping track of my FIR/GIR/putts/Scrambles - Tells you what part of your game you need to work on!

I got one of those notebooks for keeping track of those stats today, and I'm looking forward to some real stats on my own game to try and round out the card a bit in that dept.

Good job man! Although 9 holes seems like such a tease in a way (I shot a 44 on one 9 but still shot over 100 for 18, go figure ).

iPutt - That can definitely happen if eat eat the wrong thing, or get fatigued...  Do you usually do better of worse after the front nine? i find that i usually shoot the back nine 1-4 strokes better than the front.  Probably because I'm warmed up and loose.

Splifton - My putting was on fire! Before the round i really focused on my wedge game, and sinking 10 footers on the practice green.

That actually was on the back nine, just got on a roll I guess. Great job again though, great to prove to yourself what you can do if everything comes together.

Great job, breaking 80 was a huge mental block for me, I used to hit 12-14 GIR and still shoot over 80.  It was all mental, after I broke 80 one time, I didn't shoot over 80 for the next 3 months!!!!  Hope that inspires you.  Get your GIR up and you will really be rocking it!

I beat you there, I have broken 80, 4 times over 8 years. The first time it was a freak game, I didn't have a handicap, but breaking 100 was a good day for me at the time - so breaking 80 was just weird. The last three were over the last three years, once per year each year. I have lots of 80's and 81's in the system but breaking 8-0 on a regular basis still alludes me.

Well done, Jasonbolt! As someone who first broke 40 on 9 this past year myself (also with a 38) I can attest to the confidence it brings. I just hope I didn't rust-over too much during the long winter...

    • Day 2: August 12.  I did 25 balls of the ruler drill from LSW for putting.  24 of the 25 stayed on the ruler through 36" but some were smoother than others.  I suspect if the ruler (and goal) had been 48" far fewer would have stayed on.  I'm trying to go by sound, and not look, since when I attempt short putts, I don't want to look (although now I wonder if that's conventional wisdom that turns out to be wrong).
    • Day 17: did mirror work while watching TV. Working on wrist feels.
    • Day 315 - 2025-08-12 Got a little work in before Juniors showed up for one of their Summer Sessions.
    • I always knew it as high but never that distance was 90-95% of rating! That has always played to my advantage. I never have but I could totally vanity cap myself by playing **super** long courses that are otherwise super easy. There was one course like that in LA that I used to play that helped my cap like that. The back tees were close to 7k yards, but otherwise the course was incredibly easy. Wide open, misses almost always had a play at the green from the adjacent hole, flat greens, not challenging green complexes, etc. But it got a high rating because it was so long. So I could swing hard, spray and pray, and score well (relative to my handicap).
    • Do need a special ferrul. Thanx 😉
