So I’m going to pull the trigger soon on a new set of G10 irons, and I want to get a hybrid along with a new sand wedge, and possibly a lob wedge.

I went on Pings website first to take a look at the specs on the G10’s to verify the lofts (See the specs below) and I guess I got confused on what degree hybrid I should look to get. The G10 3 iron has a loft of 21 degrees, but most 3 hybrids sold are at 18 degrees, so should I look to get a hybrid at 21 or 20 degrees???

Same question really for the sand wedge, can I get away with one sand wedge at 56 degrees, or is it better to get 54 and 58-degree wedges. I’m trying to be cost efficient, and not go crazy, but I would also like these clubs to last me a while. I guess I’m not really sure if it’s really worth having both wedges, sand and lob. I’m a 25 handicap, but looking really to improve a lot this year.

If you are going to use the numbers given above and are purchasing their 46 and wedge, then just going with a 56 sand wedge is a big gap to manage.  Personally with a 46 PW I would look to go 52, 56, 60.  Being cost efficient and wanting clubs that are going to last a while don't usually go hand in hand.  The set up I mentioned will allow you to cover a broad range of shots.

If you are looking to save a buck right now, you could hold off on a 60 LW for now.  This past year was the first year that I have actually really gotten into golfing to improve my game and become a player rather then just for something to do.  Out of then entire year last year I used my 60 LW once.  It was on a shot that I should have used my 56 SW to begin with so in all actuality I shouldn't have used it.  Now that just might be me and how I play and you might play differently so Im just throwing out an opinion.

To give you an idea my clubs are roughly 9.5, 15, 19, 21, 24, 27, 30, 35, 40, 45, 52, 56, 60*

I could easily get away without the 19, 21, 52, and 60* clubs based on where I find myself hitting shots from on the courses I play.  However, as I have been improving I find that it is nice to have some of the clubs for situational shots and different weather conditions.  With where you are now I would go with the least amount of clubs you are comfortable with and learn to play that way.  It helps you to learn how to hit different shots and judge distances.  I will go out with every other club from the list above and play that way soemtimes.  It makes things interesting and changes how you approach the game.  I don't usually keep scores those days, but I doubt it is much worse as it seems to make me focus on the shot a little more.

My clubs are 9.5 - 15 - 19 - 22 - 25 - 28 - 32 - 36 - 40 - 45 - 50 - 54 - 58.

Gaps - as close to 4* I can get.

If you go with 2 wedges 51* and 56*  -   keep the 3iron and get an 18* hybrid

Or 3 wedges  50* - 54* - 58*   no 3 iron and get a 19* or 20* hybrid.

P.S.you will always be confused and wont get any better...haha

Don't worry too much about the loft stated on the hybrid, the important thing is the distance you hit it in relation to your next iron.  I play a 17 (2i) and 19 (3i) hybrid and my 4 iron is 24.  There is about 15 yards between each club so my gaps are filled nicely with this setup.  With a 46 PW you could try a 52/58 setup.  I play 47/54/60, there is a 20 yard gap between each of these clubs for me.

To the original poster, the club I would worry least about is the 60 degree wedge.  As a 25-handicapper, I think it's a club you'll very rarely need to hit.  Definitely go with some sort of gap wedge.  With a 47 PW, something like 52 and 56 degree wedges will be good.  Should you really need that 60 for a flop shot, you can just open of the 56 a bit.  That's what I do.  Despite what my signature says, I took the 60 degree out a while back for an additional hybrid.
