For the first day this year in West TN, the weather is fit for golf. That reminds me that I'm probably moving to East TN at the end of the summer for the sake of graduate studies.

That said, what are the preferred courses in and around Knoxville, TN?

If I could find a cheap public course to frequent, that would be preferred.

If youre looking for cheap muni's, check out 1) the wee course- great par 3 course right outside of town  2) knoxville municipal course-the site of my only hole in one 3) three ridges- outside of downtown off 640, relatively inexpensive.   Thats all i can remember as i was there while at utk, so my memory is slightly fuzzy to begin with.  Go Vols!!!

This might not be much help... but I've played River Islands and liked it.  It's actually in Kodak, about 25-30 min from Knoxville.  Probably not the course you want to play every time, but it's worth the trip once or twice.

(good to see a fellow West TN person here - I'm originally from the Henry/Weakley county area)

Not sure about courses in Knoxville, but Dandridge CC and Patriot Hills in Dandridge are nice public courses, and are about 25 min or so from Knox.  Millstone in Morristown is also a nice public course and is about 35 min or so from Knox.
