I try not to be judgmental on something I haven’t seen or tried first hand, but I’m not too sure about this one...

RobotPutt Vending Machine Dispenses Putting Lessons.

A can of pop or a candy bar might give you an energy boost for a couple of minutes, but the makers of the RoboPutt vending machine feel your money could be better spent, particularly if you’re an avid golfer with a terrible putting game. Designed to be installed in pro shops or somewhere near a golf course, the RoboPutt machine provides 5 minutes of putting training and instruction for a mere $5.

Users bring their own putter, since it helps to use a club you’re already comfortable with, and in the process of creating their user account they attach a small sensor to it and record the mechanics of their current putting swing. Once satisfied, that information is uploaded to the RoboPutt machine and is stored with their ID for future comparisons. Each user is also provided with a swipe card so their information is available on any RoboPutt machine around the world. For the actual putting lessons they then attach their putter to a mechanical arm which goes through the motions of a proper putting swing so that a user can build up the appropriate muscle memory over time.

There are options to simply go through the motions of the swing you recorded to reinforce what you already feel is an ideal swing (if you’re a professional golfer for example) or to have the RoboPutt machine take into account and correct the swing you recorded to improve your game. And after that more advanced lessons are also available to help you master any kind of putting scenario.

...while a good idea...not every putting stroke is the same per person. some people have different styles of putting. does it do stockton? how bout SBST? arcing?...take a look at everyone on tour...they're not all robotic swings, let alone the same...just b/c you can hit the ball straight off the club face doesn't make you a good putter. in an ideal, flat world. yes. $5 bucks wasted IMO

I don't think this is designed for over-analytical single cappers in mind, If you take your average group of executive hackers, the men who can consistetnly hit the putter with a perfectly square face are going to score better.

I saw this Robot in action. It is absolutely amazing. They have a very sophisticated registration process where the pro measures your putting arc plane&radius;, putter type/length , toes to ball  etc and enters all the information to your profile on the robot. When you take your first lesson, you get to experiment multiple different putting strokes including SBST vs. different arcs. You get to choose your personal tempo and the amount of upswing you want to use in order to roll the ball(Dave Stockton) or if you'd like a simple pendulum.  I was in their beta program and my putting has improved significantly .  I highly recommend you try it out!

    • They need to do something to speed  up play. They could randomly  time  players. One  idea would  be  if a group gets  out  of  position they are disqualified. If its a group of  3 and  its  1 player playing like  molasses i can imagine an exciting interaction, lol
    • I agree with @dennyjones, a suspension of some meaningful duration would be better than getting bounced from the Tour. They might consider experimenting each week. It might generate a bit of interest. I like the idea of a visible shot clock. If a player and their caddy can’t decide on a strategy and pull the trigger in XX seconds (30? 45? 60?), one stroke penalty. Give each player 2 resets a round. The clock starts when the last player to hit’s ball stops moving. Other pace ideas could be used every couple events until a consensus is reached to adopt or ditch an idea.
