What was your first specialist sand wedge that didn't come with the set of irons? And do you think it has benefitted your game?

I got my King Cobra M/54 Wedge on Wednesday, and already I'm benefitting from it, I just feel so invincible around the greens at the moment, I even chipped in from about 50 feet with my 3rd shot of it.

I bought a 55 degree Wilson Harmonized BeCu sand wedge and it seemed to work decent. I couldn't tell because I was still struggling to hit the ball. I liked the ping sound mainly. As I slowly improved, I used it mainly for chipping and sand play.

Once I finally got better and purchased my set of 804s, I went to play Disney and bought a Titleist 56 degree vokey in the pro shop. On the first hole, my first ever shot with the club was a lipout on a chip from deep rough about 30 yards from the hole. I've since had that club altered to fit the specs of the rest of my clubs.

I also purchased an Oil Can 52 (bent to 51) from Titleist already adjusted. The second shot I used with it was a knock down from about 120 yards that landed 2 feet past the hole and stopped dead.

I can't complain about either of them.

Hello Ben2,

My first specialist wedge is a KZG 56 degree forged, I use the Ben Hogan Carnoustie wedges now... I too noticed lower scores when I began learning to use the wedges properly. I have just scheduled a couple of lessons with my PGA pro on the wedge game and I have no doubt that my game will benefit after I practice the shots that the pro will teach me.

When I first started playing about four years ago, I purchased a Vokey 256.14 wedge. As I have learned, through sometimes painful ( or expensive ) experience, it is often less the arrow than the indian. I am sure that just about any club from a reputable manufacturer is pretty good. That being said, I've stuck with the Vokey wedges ever since I purchased my first one. I've tinkered with the shaft, grips, loft and bounce. I'm still working on improving my ability to get out of them all I can! If you find a wedge that appeals to you, you'll probably work just a little harder to use it well than if you had antipathy toward your wedges and, then, presto, as a result of all that practice, you'll use that wedge well and swear it's the best damn wedge ever! Good luck to you.

When I first started playing a couple of years ago, I took a Haig Ultra Sand Iron (no idea on loft) from an old set that was kicking around my parent's house. Vintage approximately 1967. The club is still in use by my son, but I now use a Cleveland 900 56 degree wedge for most of my greenside sand shots.

Original Cleveland 588. I am on my second one now. There may be better wedges, but I know exactly how this one performs, which really matters in short game where everything is about controlling the shot.

That must have resulted in about 30 degrees of bounce! I've used R90's and Sandy Andy's off and on for 20+ years myself and the first thing I always do with a "new" one is grind off a load of the bounce.

60 degree RAM Rour Grind, By far the cheapest club in my bag but one of the best.
I toyed with the idea of getting a Vokey but thought "I hit this so well why run the risk".

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
