Yes. Big enough that you shouldn't change from one to the other without at least testing it first.

Moving from most flexible to most stiff: L (ladies), A (senior), R (regular), S (stiff), X (x-stiff).

There are more variations within these also. Additionally you've got graphite vs steel, which feels different. This does not mean that a Project X Regular shaft feels the same as a True Temper Regular shaft. They may, but they may not. There are no definitive guidelines on the shaft flex, so every manufacturer can get it different. The alphabetic range is a good start, but you always want to test them out first.

There's also a BIG difference between regular flex shafts from the same company.  one product line can be quite a bit different from another product line.  not to mention the fact that there's a BIG difference between various different companies' regular (or any other flex) shats.  being that there are no "standards" in golf.

I can attest to the "regular flex in one company may not equal another's".

I have been recently looking to buy a 3 hybrid.  I am used to Taylormade shafts which are normally Aldila shafts.  Their regular flex is fairly soft which works with my slower tempo swing.  I am right around 80 degrees with a hybrid.  To where an Adams regular flex which is a usually a Graffaloy shaft seems pretty firm to me.

As a general rule of thumb, the fitters at my local store say that a swing speed of under 80 usually requires a senior flex and above 80 they recommend a regular flex shaft.

I was incorrectly playing ladies flex shafts for the past 3 years thinking my swing speed was too slow for anything else.   Boy was I wrong, switched this season and already seeing much improvement distance wise at the range.  Irons are about a club longer than before per club and my driver probably 20-30 yds longer.

Take the time and have the fitters recommend the right flex for you.

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
