Was thinking the same thing -   that's some serious hop to hit the guy's cap brim 20 yards after impact (or so he claims).  Solid ground for sure (or hit a rock or cart path).  When in doubt, wait it out.

Sorry for the tangent, but actually aren't most courses designed with at least one drivable par 4?

The Reader's Digest version...

I hit into a group ahead of me and hit a dude.

I do this a few times a year, but never hit someone before.

The dude was pi$$ed.

I think he was too pis$$ed, after all, I said that I was sorry.

I don't think it was my fault because the people behind me might have gotten upset if I had waited for the group to get off the green.

Wasn't I really the victim here?

No.

Yeah... I think you really have to err on the side of caution.  If you think that there is a chance that you might hit the group ahead you gotta wait... a pissed off group behind is better than an injured guy in the group in front every time.

I think you had a third option, you could have decided to make sure you were going to end up short even though you didn't think it was the best option for you to score well.  I think you should be commended for thinking about the group behind you but if you were so concerned with them you could have thought that your punishment for an errant drive was that you would have 100+ yard approach shot.  I know I am not at the same skill level as you but there are times when it would be advantageous for me to play up the wrong fairway after an errant drive, but I won't do it if it will severely impact the group I am playing with or the group that is coming down the other fairway. I don't have a regular foursome so I play with many different people and I find that the manners of the people I play with has about the same or more impact on my enjoyment of the round as how well I played.

Yeah, I don't know why the OP didn't just plop a little 200 yard 8-iron right onto the 100 yard marker.

I can understand the apprehension. There is nothing worse than being behind someone who is waiting for a green to clear that is 300+ out, and then they chunk the shot, (yes i've done that too)

Safety has to be the play though.

if you could hit like that, then your tee shot probably put you way outta range of the people behind you.  you were also on another fairway.  i'm sure they'd understand.  after all, they've watched how well you played on the holes leading up to it.

I've been in your situation before and it is very tough to wait. The pressure that the group waiting on the tee puts on you and the justification that goes through your head of "there is no way i will get it there" makes it seem like a reasonable decision to just hit the ball. I've done this way too many times only to either hit a horrible shot or pipe it into the group ahead of me - never seems to work out like I want. But, if you think about it, if you do wait the extra 5 minutes until the green clears and then hit, putting yourself up around the green, the group behind you can then hit 2 or 3 times in a row without waiting. To me, the small inconvenience of waiting an extra 5 minutes is well worth it.

Cheers

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
