How to figure out shaft flex...

I just got a new used set of irons on which the shaft labels have been removed.  The guy at the shop said he thinks that they are Rifle 6.0 shafts (not Project X) but wasn't positive.  I removed the grip on the 3 iron and underneath it said "3-7 USTIC 44.00."

Is there anyway I can find out what shafts these are for sure?

Rifle iron shafts are guaranteed or fixed length shafts...meaning the 3 iron has to have a three iron shaft and 7 iron uses a seven iron shaft. Most companies, use the philosophy of cutting any raw length shaft and using that shaft in any head.

So to answer your question...the 44.00 is the raw length used for your 3 iron. However, I don't quite understand why the flex or even CPM number is not right there with the length. Without stickers on the shaft, you will never be able to tell the shaft flex.

OP might not be able to tell, but a clubfitter with the right equipment could do a frequency test on the rifle shaft, which is stepless.

With traditional stepped shafts, a fitter can make a quick estimate based on distance from hosel to first step of the shaft. (A Stiff shaft would have less distance from hosel to first step than a Regular flex.)

Some more advanced club fitters have devices that can measure the flex of an iron. Comparing the flex of your irons to those of OTR clubs shouldn't be too hard given the right equipment.

I took the three iron into Roger Dunns this morning... he put it in a some device, took a reading, looked a chart and said that they were Rifle 5.5s.
