I think it's safe to say he's got one of the more unusual swings on tour.  And by saying unusual, I mean NOT fundamental and would equate to a ton of problems for a lot of folks if they were to try it.

His backswing is quite long.  He brings his arms way, way back ala John Daly.

He keeps a lot of his weight on his right side, which is very evident when he hits the driver.

Up until relatively recently I had a problem of ballooning balls off the tee.  This was mostly caused by keeping my weight on the right side.  It was a big problem for me and it's something I still fight w/ to this day to keep the flight lower, more penetrating and thus more distance.

How he can keep his weight back and still hit it as far and well as he does is a mystery to me.  It really is.  And from what I've seen on a couple of the slo mo camera shots, he's hitting the ball off the top part of the face w/ the driver.  Which is another thing I've struggled with because that again, will cause ballooning of the ball.  But ol' Rory seems to get away w/ this too.

The elongated backswing is something I continue to be amazed by as well.  But, that's why they're pros.  Bringing your arms way back, bending both the right and left arm but yet get the face back to square at impact has to take a ton of time to perfect.  I'm in the single plane, flatter swing group.  (ala Kucher)  Going to that type of swing has made me a pretty decent golfer.  I could never put it all together if I were to have such a long backswing.

So, what am I missing?

I certainly don't claim to be any kind of expert on swings, so it's very possible I'm totally missing the boat here.......

That's one dude I can't watch for very long. Seems like a great guy and he's definitely interesting, but everything about Kuchar's swing and setup looks completely goofy to me and I wouldn't want any of that leaking into my game. If I'd never seem him until this year I might think he was playing with a junior set on a dare.

haha.  It's not like I set out to copy him or anything like that because I didn't.  I work w/ a pro and my swing worked into something similar to that of a Kucher, or a flatter, one plane swinger. It's worked out pretty well for me.  To each his own.

And I have to think it's his height (6'4) that makes his irons look so damn tiny, isn't it?  Because you're right, it does look goofy.

Hahaha I was just about to post about this...I went on youtube looking at his swing, and wow, talking about leaning on your right side. I found myself holding a club trying to mimic what he does, but I don't even plan to copy what he does, it would take a LOT of practice to perfect that swing.

I'd probably be better off copying Kuchar than the mess I have going on now, but no, I can't see emulating Sabbatini either.

    • Day 33 (13 Dec 25) - Worked on weight shift and resetting the left heel during downswing (after listening to a discussion on Golf School this morning on PGA Tour Radio).  It centered on how Jack Nicklaus lifted his lead heel and how long driver champs do as well.  Taking cues from that discussion, worked an exaggerated feel of the left heel working doing some swing drill in the backyard using the 7i.  Wrapped up the session by hitting a few low bump and run shots in the backyard - keeping the process slow and exaggerated.
    • Day 123 12-13 Rotation and getting to lead side work. Recorded face on. Hit a few foam balls but did plenty of rehearsals today.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
