Reverse Pivot

A common problem is to create a backswing where the right hip is high and the upper body leans left. This is often as a result of following the poor advice of keeping your head down! The body is not wound into the right side and is 'jammed', so the muscles have no energy stored in them. The player therefore has no energy to transfer on the way down and usually will rock back onto the right foot, losing balance and creating a slice due to the across-the-ball swing that is the result.

Try lifting your left toe off the ground at address. This will take away your pivot point of a reverse pivot and allow you to feel your weight moving more towards your right heel in your backswing. Allowing your head to shift a little will help, as will getting your spine set a touch more right at address. The biggest thing is to not listen to the person telling you to keep your head down!

  1. You don't need to "coil into your right side"
  2. The right hip CAN and SHOULD get higher in the backswing in most types of swings.
  3. A reverse pivot, in my book, includes the weight moving right in the downswing . You can't define it based solely on the backswing.
