My local club is offering a "Player Development" membership for what seems to be a good deal. Anytime unlimited range use, and green fees 7 days after 2pm for $500 annually.  Doing the math, I'd need to play 25 rounds per year to break even (figure does not include the range use, which I currently pay for)  I'd be able to play once a week +/-, so it seems like a no brainer. Here in South Texas, we can play all year.

Is this an exceptionally good deal, or are these types of memberships common?

The range alone sounds worth it.

You may want to research the course a bit - how busy is it after 2 each day? Do they have high schools that practice/play there in the afternoon.

I know around here the average fee after 2pm is about $15 round - but even with daylight savings, you will not get in 18 before dark most days. The lines at the first tee at rate drop time is insane. Would playing 14-15 holes be cool or frustrate you?

I am sure that you pay $10 for a bucket of balls at most ranges, so the price seems like a no brainer. Just make sure you are going to be happy playing there.

I think it's a great deal, on Long Island, the cost for the same membership is $1500.

The normal price drop time is 3pm, so the 2pm time should allow me to get there first. I can also book a tee time online weeks in advance, so that helps. Good tip on the HS team, if there is one. I'll check on that. I'm always off one day during the week, so I think I'll probably go for it. This club is 2 miles from the house and maintained fairly well. It even hosted a PGA event years ago. I know I'd play a lot more if it was already paid for and all I gotta do is show up.

An annual range pass at my course is $289 (unlimited balls, any day of the week).  An annual golf pass (anytime Mon-Fri, $3/nine on weekends anytime, but no range balls) is $549 without an electric cart, and $899 with a cart.  As long as you can get on the course after 2pm, I'd say it's a great deal!

    • It isn't about maintaining focus 100% of the time when you are on the course. It is getting focus back for the shot at hand. Even PGA tour players will chat with their caddies or opponents about non-golf stuff, but then lock in. It is hard to try to constantly be 100% locked in for 4+ hours.  Totally normal thing to happen. You really only need a few moments of focus.  This is where a pre-shot routine helps. Maybe you need to add something that gets the focus back.  I just focus on every shot like a puzzle that needs solved. I like solving puzzle and problems. So, I try to be curious. Which then enhances focus. I think it lets me take each shot at hand. It lets me have the down time between shots. What I do is just get to the ball, and then start gathering information. Yardage, lie, wind, where is the pin at, etc.. Then I figure out what I want to do.  It's not like I can't shut off the thoughts and focus when I need to. I only need to focus for a few minutes before each shot.
