I don't like how much my head moves away from the target between A6 and A7 but that's not my priority piece for now. (unless it's a very simple fix).

Second one is private right now.

  • 2 years later...

I haven't hit a ball for a couple of years (apart from 2 range visits) but I'm getting back into golf - must be the unusually warm weather we're having.

I don't think I'm doing too badly here baring the above in mind.

As always, any feedback is greatly appreciated.

And here I am, back again after a long break, wanting to get back into playing.

First swings in about 4 years.

Looks like my head is moving back a couple of inches (from setup) prior to impact which will be contributing to my misses (fat/thin).

Any comments are appreciated.

Use your body. Not just your arms. You're so narrow.

Trying to get a flatter left wrist at A4. (for me a cupped left wrist at A4 leads to a wide open clubface at A7).

Trying to get wider in the backswing by keeping my right arm straighter.

Drilling a lean towards the target (Elkington style practice swing?) at the top of the backswing for a better key #1 - (to prevent my head shifting behind the ball and rising up.)

Drilling getting the weight forward and hands down around A6.

Hits felt pretty good.

Notes: chicken wing through impact. Need to keep arms straighter longer.

Some observations after watching through the videos and adding lines to help spot/track how much I'm shifting in XYZ directions.

DTL

  • Looks a bit OTT

FO

  • Head is moving forwards in backswing
  • Head moves back to setup position at impact albeit a few inches lower.
  • Chicken wing
  • Weight
  • Head moving forward isn't typical for me so potentially caused by the feel / drill I was trying out of leaning my back towards the target at A4

Lower camera angle than previously - now at hand height and as in line with my hands as I could get it.

Can't wait my 5sk dvd set arrives soon after finally biting the bullet and purchasing it after ummin and ahhing  for the best part of a decade!

Obviously feel isn't real, but I'm going try feeling like I'm making a "traditional" swing, moving towards my right in the backswing to see what that looks like on video. Hoping it gets me more centered over the ball at A4.

Also want to lay off the club at the top a bit more and have the shaft shallow out in the downswing.

And so your priority thing, the one thing you're going to try to fix, is what?

Sure but how? What specifically?

Good question @iacas

as a priority, I think the coke bottle drill will help for the translation to the left or right in the back swing. (Although my head is moving to the left in my most recent video, that's not really a typical issue for me - but this would cover translating left and right in case it's creeping back in).

Your shift and turn wall drill also looks like it could be a good one for me

And for dipping through impact, not wholly sure, but earlier extension of the legs and tucking my butt under, (limbo drill).

But I also feel that maybe a drill swinging from left arm parallel to right arm parallel with straight arms could help, as if my arms are straight then no dipping down would be needed. E.g. 1 min 30 in the below, but with a shorter backswing

Fixed the chicken wing.

The feeling here was to swing like Mac A3 to A8.

Really I'm making a pretty much full swing, but it is much better through impact  - apart from the clubface being wide open at A7 - this often comes from cupping my left wrist at A4 ( need to get a dtl video to confirm). Feeling like DJ usually fixes this for me.

I'm not convinced that key #1 is my priority so I'm going to change tact.

I think my priority should be key #2, getting my weight further forward at A7.

To attack this I'm going to drill the above feel like mac swing (with a DJ dorsiflexion of the wrist at A4) but feeling like I'm popping a balloon between my thighs through impact as per an older comment from @mvmac as well as the preset weight forward drill.
