Many sets are D0 for 3-9 irons, then d2 for PW and gap and d5 or whatever for sand/ lob, Why is this, what kind of difference are we talking about, and would it be better if they were all the same swing weight? Thx, Ard 1

All Pings except for Cleveland wedges

A lot of people, myself included, like a heavier "feel" in their wedges.  My irons are progressive from D1.5 (4i) to D5 (GW), and my 56° and 60° wedges are both D6.

this brings up another question i have.  if you increase swing weight with even club gapping lofts, will this mess up your club distances or not?

curious

Swingweight is all about feel, not distance.  My SW's are incremental because my irons were built as an MOI matched set, not swingweight matched.

The wedges are specialty "feel" clubs that are unique in their own right. They are not distance clubs and are almost never swung with 100% effort. The extra weight helps with those finesse shots around the greens and in the bunkers. My set is D2 with the 54-60 coming out at D5.

Another thing to consider: The total weight of the clubs - if you hung each from a scale - increases as you go from long irons up through wedges.

For the Callaway X20s with Regular steel shafts:

3i = 413 grams | 6i = 428 grams | 9i = 446 grams | PW, AW = 452 | SW, LW = 461 grams

You lose 1/2" from shaft each time you go to a higher numbered iron, but get increasingly heavier heads in actual weight. Basically the X20s go up about +6 grams each in weight, with +9 grams for the two shortest wedges.
