Hi im new to this site so hello to everybody. Iv joined because I desperately need help with every aspect of my golfing game, I am easily the worst golfer I either know or have come across.

I have been playing golf for only around a year, I was bad when I started and have seen no improvement what so ever. Its at the point where Im embarrased to play even at a pitch and putt, because on a par 3 thats around only 100 yards I will often take 6-8 shots from tee to cup.

Clearly I have many problems, which cannot be addressed in one go. So I'll start at the beginning, with teeing off;

- I can rarely even make contact with the ball off a tee (with either driver, wood or iron) and when I do it will simply trickle off and land about 20 yards away

- As a result, when I can, say at pitch and putts, I hit my first shot off the groud with no tee. This has very slightly better results as usually hit the ball very low, pretty much along the ground and it goes about 50 yards. On the rare occasion I make any kind of decent contact with it it will still only go about 60-70 yards and will hook wildly to the left (Im right handed).

- Club choice seems utterly pointless, be it a wedge or a 5 iron, there seems no change in the poor distance I hit.

So theres the first of several major problems. I'm not expecting to become Arnold Palmer, my ultimate aim is to be able to shoot a full 18 at a maximum of 10 over par consistently, thats a level I would be thrilled with. Short term, improving to the point where i don't embarrass myself or the people I play with would be great.

Thanks for reading the above and ANY help, recommendations would be greatly appreciated

I would get a lesson. You can then learn the basic fundamentals or grip, posture etc

Sounds like your missing the ball or topping it; usually a result of lifting up out of the shot ( lifting head and shoulders ).

Ungolf Related Question: Whats your age?

First Question: What kind of clubs you swinging?

Second Question: Have you considered lessons(if financials would permit them)? 50yds at best with a 5i is about as bad as it gets.

Third Q: How do you grip the club, do you keep your hands together? Do you hold it like a baseball bat? A good golf grip that may feel awkward at first is the key to developing a good golf swing.

There are other tips I can think of but I think getting these things answered first is a good start.

Sounds like you are:

Using an arms and hands swing, instead of swinging with your body.

Trying to use an inside-to-inside clubhead path, which becomes outside-in.

Trying to pick the ball clean (scooping).

Taking your eyes off the ball before impact.

You could do a web search for body powered golf swing .  Golf Swing Master Key is the one I use, but there may be other good ones.  You may also find some free video instruction.

I'm 21

Swinging whatever is cheapest or available to be honest. Slazenger mainly

Im currently considering it, though finances are quite tight which is why I thought id try to get some tips before hand to see if i could correct anything on my own, as this is such a source of annoyance for me as Im usually decent to good at sports in general and this just seems utterly beyond me (as you say that is as bad as it gets)

Grip tight at the top with my left, mainly gripping between the fingers, with my right hand just holding the bottom of my left and try to grip as tight with my right. Don't really know how else to explain it

Thanks for your reply
