So you see pros hit half swing shots inside 100 yards. It will bounce two or three times and stop.

I know how they do this, but it doesent make sense to me how a ball can keep spinning (backwards) after it has bounced?

It just doesent seem right...

Its called angular momentum. The ball spins at a high RPM, that carries energy. So when the ball contacts the ground, it looses its initial velocity, and rebounds, hence the bounce. In doing so it also grips the ground with friction, from the rotation of the ball, but the rebound from the ground doesnt' keep the ball in contact long enough. So the ball has backspin. It will bounce again, loose more energy and little more spin. Then when it doesn't have enough energy to bounce up to resist the ball from gripping the green, now the spin takes over.

So its like this, While the ball has enough energy to keep bouncing, which is greater than the energy the ball will have interacting with the ground due to spin, the ball will bounce. Other than that, the ball will backspin. Now, there is cases were the ball looses all its spin while it bounces, now the bounces will cause it to get top spin, and the ball will roll out. It all depends on how much energy the ball has, how much spin the ball has, and how the ball comes into the green.
