Hey all, Just won a set of Ping S57s that have standard length AWT x-flex shafts in them. I know nothing about these shafts, and thought I'd ask some of the local experts what they think: I am currently playing S400s, an inch over, and hit my 5 iron over 200 carry on average. Some better, some worse. Driver SS average is 113, 44.5" shaft. I can/have hit the high teens when stepping on the gas, but that is the exception, not the rule. I have an abrupt transition at the top (playing partner describes my shaft turning into a banana), and have very active hands through the hitting zone. Normal shot is a draw. Hooks are common. I would like to extend these AWT Xs an inch, or, if necessary, replace them with PX 6.0s, but am unsure what exactly these AWTs are stiffness wise. Can anyone here describe how these shafts compare to my S400s? What about a non-flighted PX 6.0? TIA!

the AWT shafts are flighted and weigh117 grams

DGS400's are 130gms

PJX 6.0's are 120gms

thats a pretty noticable diff IMO

shafts are pretty personal, but IMO there is no better than DG

I have tried DG, PJX (flighted and non) and KBS

i switched from DGS300 to X100's this year and picked up about 5yds per club

more than likely due to a ball flight that isnt ballooning and lower spin

best move i have ever done

OK, they start lighter, get heavier (ascending weight technology/AWT), and are flighted, i.e., the flex point shifts. Got it.

Frequency/stiffness wise, how do they compare to a DG? More than a S300/400, less than a X100/200?

I stopped playing X100 shafts a few years back, and don't think I really need them any more. I'm just trying to figure out where these are stiffness wise, so I can determine if lengthening them will soften them sufficiently, or do I need to replace the shafts.

I appreciate the input!

    • Although the base rules don't make this really clear, the Player must have decided to use Unplayable Ball relief before lifting the ball.  This exact situation is discussed in the Committee Procedures section of the Rules, section 6C(8).  Section 6C addresses how to rule when a Player proceeds under a Rule that does not apply.  Note that 9.4 applies, 9.4 deals with a player moving his ball when no rule allows it.   Rule 9.4 penalizes the Player for lifting his ball when not permitted by the Rules, and requires him to replace it.  Since he dropped and played from a different place, the Wrong Place penalty applies.  As for a serious breach, that would only apply if the Wrong Place gave him a really significant advantage.  Since he could have taken Unplayable Ball relief in essentially the same spot, for just 1 penalty stroke, the Wrong Place penalty of 2 strokes is enough "punishment", there's no need to consider a DQ.
