Hey everyone I'm looking to join the OVGA as I feel comfortable enough now that I can compete on the competitive level.  I see on the website that its $50 to join which isn't bad, but I'm pretty confident this doesn't include green fees etc.  I think it would be really fun and a great way to improve my game even more.  So, the questions I have are below.

So how many of you on here play in the OVGA?

Is it competitive?

What do the green fees usually run?

Are there cash payouts? If so how many cash placements are there on average? What are we talking, like under a hundred, 500, 1000 for 1st place?

Is it well organized?

This is my first year as an OVGA member, and I have had a great experience.  You are correct in that the $50 membership fee does not included green fees, you pay for each event individually.  The fees range from $30-$75, with an average around $50.

Is it competitive...  Sure.  It is flighted and contains a few + caps all the way up to 32 cappers.  I would classify it more as an advanced league.  By that I mean, they are single round events and many times players play with the same 4-some often.  The "tour" aspect comes from playing a different location each week.  Players are grouped according to flight standing for the "major" events to increase the competitiveness.

It is well organized, but I do not believe there are any cash payouts.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.  Winners of each event, I believe, will have an opportunity to play for a spot in the World Amateur event with fees paid.  In the end the OVGA is centered around the Building Blocks for Kids Charity.

OK thanks vasaribm!  I hope they do have cash payouts however.  I just think it would make it more exciting and competitive for myself.  If it isn't then it would be just an expensive casual round with some strangers IMO.

I wouldn't necessarily call it expensive.  At $50 average fee, its the same weekend rate you find at most courses here in cincy.  If nothing else the guaranteed tee times, different courses, and meeting new local area players was enough of a reason for me.  Its a lot easier than trying to get the usual buddies together, at times, too.  It definitely falls closer to the "casual round with strangers" idea more so than true tournament play, but events like the East/West Cup (think Ryder Cup), the year end Tour Championship, and World Amateur qualifier will be a tournament atmosphere.

    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
