My son (6) and I run up to the local course from time to time and mess around on the putting green for 15 min up to 30 mins.  Late in the day is the best time.  The green is almost always empty, and he can do whatever he wants with half the green while I work a bit.  My putting has been horrid lately, I've just not been making a thing.

Today, I putted the first 6 from about 30 feet decent.  Left a few short as has been the tendency lately, but I haven't played or putted in three weeks .  Second 6 from 15 feet was fine as well, 5 tap ins. Third set of six about the same.  Maybe ran one or two by the hole a bit.

The fourth set of six balls was from 25 feet, left to right break about 7 inches, and all of that came late in the putt too.  I lipped out the first one, drained the second and third.  I then moved about a foot to the left (so as not to have the exact same putt) and center-cut that one.  Moved again, drained it.  Moved again, made it too.  Took one of my kids yellow Slazenger rock balls that was a few feet away from me, told myself to hit it hard, take out about 1/3 of the break, and ram it in there, just for some variety.  It hit the pile of balls now up to the top of the cup dead center.

I immediatlely went inside the Pro Shop, got a Diet Coke, and we left.  Scary.

    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
