Thought people might want to discuss the john deere classic here. I went to day 1 yesterday of the tournament, it was my first pro tournament and it was fun to watch. I got to the grounds at 8 am and charlie wi, some guy, and ricky barnes were teeing off. I stood right behind their drives and they were all extremely accurate. After that I followed steve sticker, david toms (who dropped out after a few holes because of his hip), and mark wilson. Steve Stricker was impressive and deadly accurate with scoring clubs. After the morning groups I went to the range and watched Faxon, Vegas, Daly, Day amongst other hit balls. Daly had a cig hanging out of his mouth while he was hitting balls most of the time, lol. All these guys were impressive. Followed most of these guys during their rounds and john dalys wife was walking with us too. Honestly, Daly has game but it just seems like he doesnt have that intense focus that guys like Stricker and Day have who are going after the win. The Daly, Duval and Hamilton group had alot of followers, all were previous british open champions. Watch out for Jason Day, the guy just bombs the ball and is really going after a win.

I wonder if that's a mistake - the leaderboard shows him at +1 for the tournament (and +1 for today's round), which means he would've had a bogie on that hole (assuming the scores for all his other holes are correct.)

Btw, there's already a John Deere thread - mods, can we merge this?

Bill

I was looking at the leaderboard at golf.com - when I posted he was at +1 but now he's at +14. They must have been slow to update.

So yeah, what the heck happened?!

Quote:

After making a mess of the fourth hole, John Daly’s score on the par-4 was revised from an 18 to an 11.

Apparently Daly had jokingly told his playing partner, Todd Hamilton, to put him down for an 18. No cameras were on scene to record the action, however, and it’s possible the score may again be revised.

The trouble began for Daly when he hit his tee shot well to the right and into the rough. From there, he struggled to advance the ball, hitting it no more than a few feet until eventually taking a drop. After that, he hit into a greenside bunker before reaching the green and two-putting.

The 11 dropped Daly from 2 under on his round to 5 over before he bogeyed three of his next four holes.

Friday was not the first time Daly recorded a high number — he had an 18 in 1998 at Bay Hill.

It’s also not the single-highest score on a hole on the PGA TOUR this season. That honor goes to Kevin Na, who recorded a 16 on a hole during the Valero Texas Open.

ShotTracker currently has him at a 13. Apparently he took 7 whacks at the ball without advancing it more than a few feet before taking the drop. Very similar to Na's situation.

geez, glad I wasnt there to see that mess

While I was at there yesterday, On the last hole Hamilton pulled his drive a bit to the left into a bunker. He walked back and shoved his driver into the cooler with all the players and caddies drinks in it,lol. I should of asked him for the driver, he probably would of given it to me

You didn't feel the need to acknowledge the source of this, Kieran? You don't just copy a slab of someone else's writing and pass it off as your own.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Best quote of the day from Jason Sobel on twitter about this "John Daly's score sounds like auction: "Do I hear 11? Yes! 13? To the man in the loud pants! 18? Anyone? Going once, twice.. sold for 13!""

I like Daly's comments about it.

Interesting quote: "I really was hoping they wouldn't find it so I'd have to go back to the tee..." At first that puzzled me since there was nothing stopping him from doing so (by declaring his tee shot unplayable). But I think what he meant was that he didn't want to be tempted into trying to hit out of the native area. Sure enough, that was his undoing. :-)

That's what I mean about john, hes got game but doesn't have the focus. He probably didn't want to have to walk back to the tee, get a rules official or whatever was necessary to do the correct thing. Probably would of had a Bogey instead of a 13.

LOL

Seriously? I was in no way trying to 'pass it off as my own'

Relax.

Anyway, I fixed it as to avoid any 'confusion'

    • Day 21 - Good session with driver and 6i. Hitting real golf balls is quite a bit different from the foam balls, still getting used to that change.
    • There are so many videos comparing and contrasting everything that I am both overwhelmed and more than a bit skeptical. Your comments above are much more valuable than hours of you-tube videos. Generally speaking, I’d much prefer to read something that someone took the time and trouble to write (such as your comments) than a bunch of videos, or worse, meaningless reviews that seem like they are all cut and paste selections of the same script. I’m more of a RTFM type than a watcher of “instructional” videos. By way of explanation, I don’t watch TV either.  So thanks - I’ll take that under advisement. I have an H3 that I bought for $10 that I’ve been carrying around but not sure why. Seems like a cool club, but I just don’t really know what to do with it.
    • I was using the window as a mirror. Just trying to be a more aware of the feels for a better backswing. Trying to not be as closed from A1 to A2. Then not letting the club head flip inside. What I was feeling was a pressure my right wrist, and like the palm of my right hand was pushing upward against the grip of the club. My right hand was the underside of the swing path.  Going to play around with this a bit more. It looked pretty decent with mirror/window work. Just wanted to jot it down.
    • Day 4: 3/26/25 Par4Success workout followed by putting through 50 mm gates.
    • Day 249: did a stack putting session and then worked on 5 foot putts for a bit.
