I recently received one of these to review and had a chance to hit it at the range a week ago. I had a callaway Steelhead Plus for years and loved it. It was knocked out of the bag last year by a TM R7 steel. The TM has been a great club for me, especially off the tee. Since I gravitated towards the Callaway line once before, I thought the X-Hot might be the one fairway wood to replace the TM.

The initial feeling is pretty good for the X-Hot. After rotating it with my TM R7 3-wood and TM 460 TP on the range (off of a tee), I found that I hit the X-Hot longer than the TM 3-wood and carried it nearly as long as my driver. The driver rolled a lot further, but still I was amazed at the carry off the tee.

Off the deck, I didn't expect to get the ball up into the air. The X-Hot has a bigger head and, for some reason, I thought it would launch lower...but it didn't. Off some tight lies, it performed admirably. For right now, I'll be putting the Callaway in the bag.

I had a chance to hit this club in Orlando, and I was pleasantly surprised. The bigger head actually looks pretty good alongside a 460cc driver, and the weighting of the club gets the ball up off tight lies with no problem. I'd say this is a great 3-wood option for someone who likes to use their 3-wood as a backup driver.

Interesting you say this...and it's a point worth noting. If I were to break down my usage of a 3-wood I would say that around 70% is off the tee and the rest from the grass. With this club, I may take some more chances off the deck, but more importantly...I like what it can do from the teebox.
