I've recently bought a complete set of irons and woods on the fleamarket and was wondering if anyone knows anything about them.

They only say "PS-5000" on them and the word "Lite" in the cavity. Construction seems very decent though, with TT-Lite shafts (R) and Lamkin silhouette grips, which like the clubs are in excellent condition. I have no idea what they are and failed to find a single piece of information on the internet so far, but these actually are sweet irons (the woods are terribly dated), from the early nineties I'd reckon. Very precise and fun to play with, probably due to / aided by the fact that these shafts seem a very good match for me. Given how much I've enjoyed hitting them so far and the fact that I got the full set for 10 EUR, these might be the steal of the century for me.

I'd love to know more about them, so every bit of help / info is appreciated. Cheers!

gutten tag wolfy,

I recently bought a full set of ps5000 irons at a thrift store in Birmingham, Alabama that sound exactly like the ones you describe. Same shafts and grips and in the same excellent condition. Odd, huh? I have found no others online and no one in the extensive golf community around here has ever seen them either. Like you, I really like the way they hit, and like you, pitched the woods for more modern ones. You don't write like english is your second language, I'm guessing U.S. military? Anyway, we seem to be alike in our taste in ballhammers. If you find out anymore about them, please let me know.

Best regards-

Very interesting...

I managed, somehow to inherit a set of these from a cousin who discarded them as soon as he started earning cash and the yuppie bug bit and he NEEDED very expensive clubs.

I have looked for info on these clubs a few times, found nothing.

I have not got the chance to hit them yet so I don't know how they feel, but exactly the same shafts and grips as yours.

My grips might not be in the same condition as yours though, as they've gone kinda shiny. But they're nowhere near as old as the Ben hogan Blades I got a couple of years back.

Please do keep us posted if you find anything.

PS. These seem well travelled as I'm from South Africa. Quite far from you guys.

Hi Gentleman - not sure if you are still receiving updates on the PS 5000 Irons as the posts go back to 2011 and its now 2019!!

I'm orignally from South Africa, born in 66, and moved to Canada in 1994 along with my PS 5000 irons and Wilson, wooden 3, 5, and 1 Woods.

I still use them and score as well if not better than most of the guys who buy all the latest "jazz" - they are in fabulous condition and i have had then since i was 11 years old when i bought them from my neighbor in Durban for R40. They have played all over Canada and now in parts of the USA! People who play with me refuse to believe they are that old and play that well!! My wooden "Wilson Persimmon woods" - particularly the 3 and 5 are killer and still play as good as anything out there!!

These fabulous irons were made by a golf shop in South Africa that has stores in the major cities. It is called "The Pro Shop", see

The Pro Shop is South Africa’s largest golf equipment superstore. The Pro Shop supplies a wide range of golf clubs, golf balls, gloves, bags, golf carts, clothing, footwear and accessories. Shop this huge selection and save on...

, and hence the initials "PS" on the clubs. The "5000" was a "version #" to distinguish each model/version they made. Think of it as their "in-House Label/Brand. I have reached out to them to see if they have any of these aroundf or could point me to where to find them.

I had my PS-5000 Sand Wedge stolen when I lived in Calgary along with my putter.

Hoping this message gets to you fine gentleman and perhaps we can all play a round of golf together one day? We could start a trend and be the "PS-5000 Challengers"

They are made by Allied Golf corp. Old company that died years ago (they were around in 1931, not sure when they started). They were only sold in golf pro shops. I bought my PS-5000's brand new in the mid 80's when I was on the High School golf team at a local pro shop. They were top of the line clubs at the time. Paid close to 800 bucks for a full set back then. I still have them, getting some new stuff, and got curious about my old clubs and what they might be worth today and if they were considered good back in the day, etc, didn't find much....

My brother found some of these irons and a pitching wedge. Someone had tossed them, I'm assuming because they are not new. I needed a 3 iron to try so took that. He's keeping the 5,7,8,9 irons for me. This thread is the only one I could find about PS 5000 clubs

I have my original PS-5000 woods and irons, putter and wedge that I bought 50 years ago. They are in great condition but I am not (80 years old) so I can't play anymore. I would love to pass them on to someone (including the bag) that would enjoy them. Any thoughts folks?

Hello, I found this topic because I bought  a ps-5000 PW at my favorite thrift store today and I was trying to figure out what it would be worth on ebay...After reading everything here I went back to the thrifty and was pleased to find the rest of the set 3-PW & 1-3-5 woods (no putter)...my set doesn't have the "Lite" on the back and the flex is stiff (True Flex Power Point steel shaft (Made in USA)...If anyone would be interested I'll be listing the set in the next week...EBAY Name NHBOBF...

PS 5000,  I bought my set in 1981.  Still own the full set of irons only.  If i remember correctly the PS stood for

Palm Springs.  Purchased at a golf store.  Stainless Steel heads.

    • Nah, man. People have been testing clubs like this for decades at this point. Even 35 years. @M2R, are you AskGolfNut? If you're not, you seem to have fully bought into the cult or something. So many links to so many videos… Here's an issue, too: - A drop of 0.06 is a drop with a 90 MPH 7I having a ball speed of 117 and dropping it to 111.6, which is going to be nearly 15 yards, which is far more than what a "3% distance loss" indicates (and is even more than a 4.6% distance loss). - You're okay using a percentage with small numbers and saying "they're close" and "1.3 to 1.24 is only 4.6%," but then you excuse the massive 53% difference that going from 3% to 4.6% represents. That's a hell of an error! - That guy in the Elite video is swinging his 7I at 70 MPH. C'mon. My 5' tall daughter swings hers faster than that.
    • Yea but that is sort of my quandary, I sometimes see posts where people causally say this club is more forgiving, a little more forgiving, less forgiving, ad nauseum. But what the heck are they really quantifying? The proclamation of something as fact is not authoritative, even less so as I don't know what the basis for that statement is. For my entire golfing experience, I thought of forgiveness as how much distance front to back is lost hitting the face in non-optimal locations. Anything right or left is on me and delivery issues. But I also have to clarify that my experience is only with irons, I never got to the point of having any confidence or consistency with anything longer. I feel that is rather the point, as much as possible, to quantify the losses by trying to eliminate all the variables except the one you want to investigate. Or, I feel like we agree. Compared to the variables introduced by a golfer's delivery and the variables introduced by lie conditions, the losses from missing the optimal strike location might be so small as to almost be noise over a larger area than a pea.  In which case it seems that your objection is that the 0-3% area is being depicted as too large. Which I will address below. For statements that is absurd and true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. You will need to provide some objective data to back that up and also define what true 100% sweet spot is. If you mean the area where there are 0 losses, then yes. While true, I do not feel like a not practical or useful definition for what I would like to know. For strikes on irons away from the optimal location "in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?"   In my opinion it ok to be dubious but I feel like we need people attempting this sort of data driven investigation. Even if they are wrong in some things at least they are moving the discussion forward. And he has been changing the maps and the way data is interpreted along the way. So, he admits to some of the ideas he started with as being wrong. It is not like we all have not been in that situation 😄 And in any case to proceed forward I feel will require supporting or refuting data. To which as I stated above, I do not have any experience in drivers so I cannot comment on that. But I would like to comment on irons as far as these heat maps. In a video by Elite Performance Golf Studios - The TRUTH About Forgiveness! Game Improvement vs Blade vs Players Distance SLOW SWING SPEED! and going back to ~12:50 will show the reference data for the Pro 241. I can use that to check AskGolfNut's heat map for the Pro 241: a 16mm heel, 5mm low produced a loss of efficiency from 1.3 down to 1.24 or ~4.6%. Looking at AskGolfNut's heatmap it predicts a loss of 3%. Is that good or bad? I do not know but given the possible variations I am going to say it is ok. That location is very close to where the head map goes to 4%, these are very small numbers, and rounding could be playing some part. But for sure I am going to say it is not absurd. Looking at one data point is absurd, but I am not going to spend time on more because IME people who are interested will do their own research and those not interested cannot be persuaded by any amount of data. However, the overall conclusion that I got from that video was that between the three clubs there is a difference in distance forgiveness, but it is not very much. Without some robot testing or something similar the human element in the testing makes it difficult to say is it 1 yard, or 2, or 3?
