Anyone care to comment on the merrits / pitfalls of creating a blended set of irons...As an example one combination I am considering is MX-25 longs (4,5,6) and MP-60 shorts (7-PW). I'm an 11 hcp, and on my good days I'd love the 60's all the way through the set...on the bad days...not so much.

I exchanged emails with customer service at Mizuno USA, and they said that the two irons have different center of gravity locations, which could lead to different swings for each. Their recomendation was to go with one set or the other.

What I don't understand is why is this any different that my replacing my long irons with hybrids? That's even more different (shaft, cog, swingweight etc.) and everyone is linning up behind that concept.

Anyone comments, or has anyone gone this route (with any brand...not just my example) and what are your experiences.

Their response does seem a little odd since their MX 900s basically do this already. I do feel the MX25s are their best club aimed at your handicap level. When paired with flighted rifle shafts they have really good control in the short irons and easy to get up in the long irons, unless you are on the verge of dropping 2 or three shots.

i used to have a blended set of Taylormade OS2 and Cleveland TA3 irons, two completley different irons. I had the rac's from 3-5 and then 6-9 was the TA3, and i loved it. While i do admit that this can kinda make bad habits cuz the racs cover up some really bad swings, then u go to ur 7 iron and it hurts like hell. I say if u feel u can hit both of them decently, and on set won screw up ur game, go for it...just my 2 cents

Center of gavity should play no part in changing your swing. As long as you got all the clubs with the same swing weight I certainly can't see why it would be a problem. They are very different clubs though, one is a players cut muscle, and the other is a big forgiving game improvement iron. I Personally would not want two irons that were so different. Mizuno does make an MP FLIHI long irons that are designed specifically to replace the long irons of their other MP models. Another thing you could look into is a progressive set like the Titleist 735 CM

sorry...let me try that again

Re. the comment re. MX-25 are the best set for my hcp...I tend to agree, and have spent a week hitting a full set of MX-25's. I really liked the feel, and control, but that thick soles in the mid and short irons really didn't suit me. I play a fairly firm course, and found the irons felt like they were bouncing. That said, the result was good.

I still need to try the 755's...seem to fit in between the MP-60 and MX-25 in terms of head shape/size

I know that some of the PGA Tour pros do that. A few years ago, I think one of the ones I noticed at a tournament was Billy Mayfair. He had all Ping irons, but the longer irons were one model and the shorter ones were a different model. I think one was either Zings or Zing2s and the other was Eye2 or Eye2+. Oh, I went to What's in the Bag at the Golf Channel website, and here is what was in his bag when he won a tournament in '98. Clipped & pasted from:

Thanks for the responses...consensus seems to be that it's not such a hair brained idea! Unless I find a good compromise (755's, X-20 Tours, R7-TP) that offer more foregiveness without the chunkiness of the MX-25's (but that's another thread) , the blended set may be my chioce.

last year Fred Funk was using 3 different kinds of irons. CGB, LT, MB
