I'm sitting here waiting for the European Tour to come on and there is the infomercial for fredericksgolf.com .I have seen it several times before and I believe that I am sold. I know that I do need to get moe flexible than I was in high school. Seems to me that this would help. Any comments?

That depends on whether you can do workouts in front of your TV. In my little condo, I know that I can't. I have been gaining flexibility from two things:

* Working out -- and stretching the golf muscles used before and after * Stretching. Daily. I use the stretches in Butch Harmon's _Four Fundamentals_ book. Now, if you've been unsuccessful in other programs, no real harm in trying this one too. But for your first one, unless you have the discipline and ability to do the workouts in front of your TV, I'd say don't. There's free TPI stuff on PGATour.com and golf fitness on About.com ; maybe these would be a good starting point if this is your first "gain flexibility" thing.

Good evening!

I just saw your post, and thought I'd reply. My first post!

I'm 58, and I've been an avid golfer for quite a while. I've never been flexible at all, and when I started playing I could barely get my hands past my knees when I tried to touch my toes. I found something that really, really helped me get much for flexible, and it was a lot less expensive than $90!

Get a book on yoga. There are several targeted at golf-specific stretching poses. There's even at least one book titled: "Yoga For Golfers." I have a copy. Good reading! I just do the stretches while I'm watching tv in the evening. All you need is enough floor space to lie down.

Give it a try!

Shindig,

Is this the Butch book you are talking about? I am assuming yes but wanted to check before I bought. http://www.amazon.com/Four-Cornersto...3126128&sr;=8-2 Thanks.

Shindig,

Yup! That's it. Since I'm taking lessons from a pro, I didn't pay much attention to Harmon's lessons on long game and short game strokes, but I did read through to see the style of shots he thought I should learn. The course management section is decent and the fitness part is great. I'm not sure if those make it worth the purchase price, but the other stories inside (Harmon's personal experiences) make it a good read as well. I re-read the fitness section every few weeks to make sure I'm still doing everything right. They hurt at first, but they're part of why I'm in shape for the first time in my life.

I just read that article. It looks pretty good, but the Somax is super expensive (their site now says $300/hour, min 30 hours). Yikes!

On the other hand, maybe at some point I should go for a tissue massage or something, now that I have muscles of which to speak. I really like the part about changing one's workout regularly. I hadn't thought of this, and I figured that I must just be getting stronger on account that my current set of exercises are getting easier. I'm going to switch up what I'm doing for the same muscles every few weeks now...

Yeah. Check out that book.

There are three exercises that require additional equipment: - He recommends a stairmaster. I've started using it only recently, although I've followed just about everything else in the book for longer. Of course, there's always just taking the stairs. - Weighted Club or Medicine Ball. He says medicine ball is a better exercise. For me, the ceiling is too low to even think about swinging a wedge fully in the house (much less the 3-Wood he has pictured). I spent about $40 for a 12-lb medicine ball and I know it's helped me.

Shin -

I have a weighted club and it is much shorter than a regular club (no jokes please). I think it weighs around 9 lbs and it is really good to warm up with. I am looking for the medicine ball to for flexibility. One of those ones with the handles. Just not sure what weight I need to get but I was thinking something in the 15 lb range.

You probably can't try them in the sporting goods store, but I think some fitness centers have "day passes" for $8 or so. Get a day pass, try out the various weights of medicine balls, and as long as you're in there, make use of some of the machines.
