O.K, I'm 10Ft from the pin, but off the green and my playing partner is 40Ft from the pin, on the green.

Who goes 1st; Him because he's further away or me because I'm off the green by 1Ft?

If you are playing ready golf, and you want the pin left in, then you go first because you don't want to remove, replace, and then remove again the pin.

If you're playing match-play or some other strictly by-the-rules format (such as in a tournament), then he goes first because he's further out.

Here you go, my friend. I'll take a cut!

Rule 10: Order of Play. During play of the hole: "...the ball farthest from the hole is played first..." Period, end of statement, nothing else matters, including where the two balls are. (Except for some exceptions that don't matter in this example.) Penalty: Stroke play: No penalty, unless the players agree to play out of order to give one player an advantage. In that case...both players are dq'ed. Since there is generally no penalty for playing out of order in stroke play, "ready golf" is both suggested, and is not in violation of the rules. Even in a tournament. Match play: The player whose turn it was MAY require the stroke played out of order to be canceled and replayed, no penalty. If we're in a match and I have the honor, and you hit your tee shot first and hit it out of bounds, I'm not going to say a word. You hit it 290 down the middle, I'm going to make you hit it over. Hope that helps! Clay

a situation happened this weekend during the first playoff hole at the honda. villegas was away but was farting around with the yardage and landing area of a difficult lay up shot and boo weekley went ahead and layed up even though he was inside of villegas' ball. but i'm sure he informed the other players before he played. sure wish the tour guys would play a little more ready golf.

If your playing by the rules (which u should be for $100) then the further ball is played first.

In the real world, off the green is first.

Yeow. I didn't have much of an opinion one way or the other about Weekley before this, but if this is true, he went up way high in my estimation.

Score one for reasonable play!

Just to further underscore what has been established, in the Big Break Ladies Only match-play finals, Danielle putted to within three or four inches on one hole and then immediately walked up and tapped it in.

Pam insisted Danielle mark the ball and to wait and re-play the putt after Pam attempted her putt. It did not accomplish a thing other than to irritate the hell out of Danielle, but Pam was completely within her right under the rules to do exactly that.

"In the real world?" If you read my quote correctly, you'd see that I was merely 10' from the pin, 2' off the green and my playing partner, although on the green, was 40+' away.

FAT: "In the real world" furthest out doesn't always mean off the green. Good luck with that handicap.

Get over yourself. That wasn't intended to be a bash! Read your own reply before you start casting stones.....

"If I'm playing by the rules"? "In the real world"? You want to elaborate on those statements....? In fact, DON"T BOTHER

That rule is good to know! They taught us in Junior Golf (WAAAAY back in the day...) that you had to wait for everyone to get on the green, and the person off the green went first... HMMM...

And no need to get snippy about all of it... there is always a "real world"/"rules" distinction!

Things are getting a bit edgy here, which certainly isn't my intention.

I'd like to throw out a few thoughts, if I may, with as much tact and diplomacy as I can muster!

There is no such thing as a "real world/rules" distinction. That's what makes the game of golf so very different from every other sport.

I do need to make my personal perspective on one point very clear: If you and I are on the singles list and get put in the same group, and you're teeing it up in the fairway, and kicking it out from under bushes, and picking leaves and stones away from your ball in a hazard, not only will I not say a word, I couldn't care less. You can play any way you want.

On the other hand, if we've got a beer and a brat riding on this, well now, that changes everything. Simply read the last five words in Rule 1-1, and you'll know all you need to know to play with me.

I've been playing with the same 6-8 guys every Saturday morning for well over ten years. They range from a couple of sub-5 handicappers, (not me!), to one guy who doesn't always break 100. They don't all know the rules, but they care about the game, and they NEVER touch the ball when they shouldn't. If they're not sure, they ask.

There are certainly many, many players who care about the game and try to follow the rules, and play by the rules as they picked them up over the years, without realizing that many of their perceptions are in error.

I give you the final scene in "Tin Cup" as a case in point.

As far as putting the original question to bed, do I chip on first if I want the pin left in, even though someone else is on the green and away? Of course. It speeds up play, and even though it's playing out of turn, there is no penalty in stroke play. If it's match play, all you have to do is ask your opponent. "Hey Bill, I'm ready...mind if I chip on?". If he's ok with it, you're good to go.

The Rules are not a nuisance, they're a wonderful part of the game, and they'll help you more than you can imagine, if you understand them.

Very well said (the whole thing, not just the quoted part).

    • 39/39/78 for an 8.7 differential. Ball striking was good. Putting and chipping was off just enough to prevent a very good score.
    • Worst thing on Sunday was that NBC and Peacock wouldn't let me FF through the commercials on my DVR recording. Very boring when a guy has a huge lead on the final round and everyone else is playing for 2nd place. At least it was USA 1-2-3 in the end.
    • First day of a trip to Bandon Dunes. We played Sheep Ranch today. A Coore/Crenshaw designed course. A par 34 on the front and 38 on the back. With 8 holes with either a green, tee box, or the hole runs along the edge of the bluffs at the pacific. It has amazing vistas. With wide fairways and intermixed gorse bushes. The defense of the course are its large, undulated greens and the daily winds from the north. Many times you need to take 3-4 clubs more, if you even barely cross the wind, your ball can be taken offline or come up half to a full club short. A fantastic layout.    here are some photos.
    • At Sheep’s Ranch, Bandon Dunes. Shot an 84. That wind was nasty going from like hole 7 forward. It was like a 3-4 club wind if in the face. Greens are tricky with the natural grass.
    • Yes. The full swing is not that different, and speed is important with all of them. You don't see Tour players hitting their driver 310 and then hitting their 7I 160. Of course, but they're nothing like those for the full swing.
