Temper Tantrums

In high school a guy in our group picked up his ball instead of tapping it in. On the next tee box, we told we would let him putt it in with a 2 stroke penalty or he will be DQ'd if he tees off. He gets pissed and the rest of the round after every hole out he says, "Did you see that. Was it legal. Are you sure it went in?"

Good times.

I was paired with a guy during a tournament who did the same thing. He had a 5-footer for par, missed it short and instead of putting it in, he lifts the ball up with his putter and proceeds to the next tee. Honestly, me and another guy in the group were a little dumbfounded since we haven't seen that in tournament play before and conferred with the fourth in our group on the next tee box. He told him he had to go back up to the green before we teed off and assess a penalty (can't remember if it was a 1 or 2 stroke penalty) or risk being DQ'd. The group behind was already walking towards the green when he reluctantly went back, placed his ball and putted. He told the group behind, "Sorry about that. These guys play country club rules." The rest of the round, we pretty much didn't talk to that guy. Even the guys behind us were shaking their heads at him.

I've never thrown a club. Other than an occasional "damn" the only thing other people might notice is that I'm not likely to talk much (if any) when I'm mad.

I do try to take it out on the golf ball on the next tee shot fairly often.

I've never thrown a club either. The worst I've done was yell out a few choice words or slam my club on the ground.

A buddy I play with says the same thing at least once after a bad shot. "Grrr...I hate this game!!! When do we play again?"

I bang a club down on the tee box from time to time, never hard enough to break it though.   I've seen a few playing partners go full mental - not pretty.   My tantrums usually involve only enthusiastic expletives ...

We had a guy do something similar in a big club tournament. He was marking his ball improperly (He would move his ball forward with his thimb and put the mark right where the ball had been instead of behind the ball). He really wasn't gaining much (what's a half inch on a five foot putt?) and his playing partner did not think he was doing it on purpose to gain an advantage, but he felt compelled to tell him to protect the field. Well, the guy did not take it well. Every time he marked his ball after that he would say, "Was that OK? Did I do it right? Is that protecting your precious field?" After a while he started getting profane and calling his playing partner some nasty names. The playing partner kept his composure, while steaming (if they got in a fight, the other guy would have been in big trouble), and the next time he did it another guy in the foursome (who used to be a division I football player) got in the guy's face and told him that if he used those perjoratives again he would stuff him in his golf bag. That put an end to it.

I smashed a club into the ground in anger on par 3 tee box one day after shanking my shot OB, and took quite a divot. One of the caddies whispered to his buddy, "If he keeps that up, theyll blame us and we won't get to play on Mondays." He didn't think I heard him, but I did. I never did it again. Embarrassing.

I get a bit angry at times, but can let it all go after a few seconds.  Sometimes breaking clubs gets expensive so I try to keep my cool most of the time.

I don't really have a blow up, but more of a shut down. When I play poorly, I stop talking, I stop thinking, I simply just grab a club and swing. I get really frustrated but I just keep it all in, which results in me playing even worse. I can dismiss a few bad shots, but if it's a consistent problem I just completely shut down and ride the bogey train back to the clubhouse.

That's me exactly (except in my case the bogey train is more like a triple bogey express...ALL ABOARD!!!) I guess on the plus side, I've recently discovered that it can work the other way for me too. I've found that I can usually ride a nice positive momentum wave for a decent stretch of holes if I can just keep relaxed after a nice shot or two. Funny, I coach youth soccer and I'm always preaching to the kids the importance of being confident and positive on the field...you'd think I'd listen for a change.

Now that I'm much older and hopefully wiser, I limit my tantrums to throwing my ball in the woods or the pond or berate myself for being an "idiot".

However, back in the day, I've done it all, I've never smashed my driver but have helicoptered several clubs down the fairway, broke shafts and even had a couple irons get stuck in a tree, which doesn't look good when you have to climb it and get it back.

I've tossed a club into a tree before. Embarrassing to say the least! When I get angry I sometimes hit my bag with the club, surprised I haven't broken my phone that's normally in there.

Never beat my clubs the worst was simply letting the club drop after the follow-through.

Or I walked off years back and sold all my clubs right there and then.

I have seen guys just beat the crap out of there clubs. One guy a few weeks back ahead of us dug a hole on the green a foot deep, maybe a foot wide? He just keep full swinging straight down on the green, i think he was heading to China!

i have broke a few clubs over my knee when I was a junior player. dad fixed the first one for me but made me pay for the next 2 out of my allowance. I haven't broke one in 32 years, although I had a bad driving spell a few months back and was getting ready to snap it over my knee. All of a sudden my dads voice popped into my head and I didnt do it.
