I have Nike hybrids in my bag, 18, 21, and 26 degree. I have already replaced my Nike Slingshot irons 3 & 4 with the hybrids. Now I have my Burner Superfast driver irons, 3wood, hybrids and irons 5-PW,SW, putter.  I rarely use my wood. I hit the 3wood 220-240, and the 18 hybrid(3) around 210-230. I know I give up 10 yards but I never get as good contact on the fairway, and mostly bad shots from the rough. So I always grab the hybrids. I basically use it only to drive off tee which I can do with a hybrid (giving up 5-10 yards) Have any of you guys ever dropped the woods altogether?

If you hitting your 3 hybrid almost as far as your 3 wood their is something wrong with your 3 wood or the way you swing it. The 3 wood should be nearly and inch longer and at least 3 or 4 degrees less loft.

I mean if you dont hit your 3 wood well then sure drop it you sure would't be the first to do that, but their really shouldn't be a reason for you not to hit that 3 wood more like 250-260 in a perfect world.

I for the most part have dropped my 3 wood in favor of a 5 wood i really like and hit almost as far.

Both are Nike Ignites, the 3wood on my best drive off tee hits (250 avg) , but thats off tee....and I hit the 18degree hybrid around 230 avg (anywhere ie: fairway, tee, or rough. Maybe I will drop the 3wood. I used it two times on my last 9 holes only to tee off, which I could have did nearly as good if not the same with the 18 hybrid.

Golf Digest has had several articles this year which at least touch on the FW vs H battle. Here's one of the links:

http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-equipment/blogs/hotlist365/2011/01/fairway-woodhybrid-debate-cont.html

Here's basic strengths of each:

  • FW: Longer shaft, thus longer distance. Greater face bulge (heel-to-toe curve) spins heel and toe hits back toward center.
  • H: Shorter shaft, thus greater control. Smaller head cuts through rough better.

Players who have trouble hooking hybrids might try a Tour head with less offset.

The club makers are redesigning FWs for greater variety and hotter faces, and are adding 7 Woods to some lines. Also, more lines are offering a 4W for people who can't quite hit a 3W.

Again, it all depends on what works.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Ive never dropped the woods altogether.  Hybrids are more forgiving but dont have the distance of a wood when you hit it flush.

Tour heads are usually 1* open making it harder to hook. generally the GI hybrids like the TM burner 2.0 or the callaway razr x are set 1* closed

I hated hybrids until I got the pro black and put a 3 iron shaft in it.  If you hook hybrids try a stock length steel shaft which effectively makes the club play flatter and with less torque.  The lie angle should be the same as the iron you are replacing it with at least.
