I have done it before...and i really liked the feel. howwwwwwwwwwwever......it IS against the rules so you cant use it if you play in any matches or competition.

Rule 3: The Grip

b. Cross-section

Appendix II, 3(i) through (iv) provide more specific parameters for the grip and states that:

(i) For clubs other than putters the grip must be circular in cross-section, except that a continuous, straight, slightly raised rib may be incorporated along the full length of the grip, and a slightly indented spiral is permitted on a wrapped grip or replica of one.

By the rules of golf, I don't believe that's exactly legal.  But hey, if we played golf together, I wouldn't run around screaming this guy's cheating.

I like that idea for chipping, aside from the illegality of it. However, it'd feel a bit weird when taking a full swing with that club.

Just learn to chip properly. If you can play golf and hit a driver and whatnot, you can manage a little chip shot well enough that you don't need a putter grip.

never thought about a putter grip but I will say that I prefer larger grips on my wedges.  i feel like i have better touch with them and like the extra size when choked down.  feels more like a regular grip that way.

I had done kind of the opposite and put a regular grip on my putter.... I did like that quite a bit and may do that with the new one... we'll see.

This idea would also requires that all "chip" shots would be executed with a square face.  I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to be locked into this by having a flat portion of a grip (putter grip).

I would.  No different from using 15 clubs or playing with mulligans.  It's a breach of the rules, and to me that's all that needs to be said.

Sure, maybe in competitive play I would, but when you're just out for a casual round, what's the point? I'd probably point out that it is against the rules (as I would normally, just for a heads-up type thing), but it certainly wouldn't be worth going beyond that, since the only person it's affecting is them. I'm out to shoot the best score I can; whether or not some schmo has a putter grip on a wedge is going to be, far and away, the least of my concerns (in a casual round, that is).
