Hi Everyone!

I'm new to this website.  Just moved back from Boston where I lived in the middle of the city and worked way too much to play any golf.  Probably played 3-4 times and I was there for 4 years!  Went from an 8 handicap to shooting 90's.  I'm back playing a couple of times a week and fortunately it's coming back quickly.

Now I'm back in Texas and have caught golf fever again.  My equipment is now aging.  What would you upgrade if you had my clubs?!?

Ping G5 10.5 degree

Great Big Bertha 3 and 5 woods

Titeilist 735CM 3-PW

Cleveland Tour Action 56 deg wedge

Cleveland CG11 high bounce 60 wedge

Scotty Cameron Blade putter circa 2001

All are stiff shafts.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Assuming stiff shaft is still correct for you, are the wedges in good working order? If so, keep them. If not, they're first. Once wedges are resolved in some fashion, go ahead to the fairway woods and the irons, in some form of conjunction. That is, figure out what you want for the "shorter than driver, longer than sand wedge" section of your bag. Then go about figuring out the order -- so, maybe you're thinking you'll get new 3W, 5W, and a 3H; figure out the general category of irons you'll go for, get a 3H that goes with that, and then go about figuring out the irons themselves. The Ping G5 doesn't really need a replacement just yet. And if you like the putter, there's no sense getting a new one for the sake of new putter.

Certainly not the putter!

But like Shindig said, probably the wedges. If I had your clubs, I'd get a driver with a lower loft (I use 8.5). Another thing I would get is a hybrid/rescue club. I don't know anyone who doesn't have one of those in their bag.

If if was MY setup, I'd look at the wedges and see if they still fit your game and course(s). Hard to say on everything else since it's still quality gear and you might be hitting it well. Stick with what you've got until you're scoring better then see where you have some holes. One new long club can throw of the dynamics of the entire set, but the right new wedges can be fit to any existing setup. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for the advice.

Has wedge technology changed that much?  the CG11 is in great shape.  56 has pretty heavy use.  Use the 56 low bounce of the fairway for more full shots within 110, CG11 60 high bounce for rough, around greens, and traps.  I'd be willing to try out some new wedges.

I'm thinking you're probably right about the hybrid/rescue.  I hit my 3 iron about 205-210, but it can be tough to hit, particularly off the deck.  If I got a 3H it needs to go about the same distance to be any use to me.  How do these hybrids compare to my 3 iron?  I'm pretty sure my 3 iron is 22 degree loft.  Do I get a 22 degree hybrid?  If not, will a hybrid go farther or shorter than an iron of the same loft?

It's not so much that wedge technology has changed so much as whether the grooves are worn or not.
22 degree, give or take. I assume, then, you'll be getting modern traditional lofts in your eventual next set of irons then? Or you aren't planning to replace the irons. But if you are going to replace them soon, figure out the loft category you're looking at. I say this because there are a great many sets with a 22 degree *FOUR* iron -- and a few with the 5-iron approaching that. For example, TaylorMade Burners have a 21-degree 4-iron and a 24-degree 5-iron. So don't just look for a "3 hybrid" ; look for one with 21-22 degrees of loft. If you decide you like the Burner hybrids (I'm not trying to sell you on TM clubs; in fact, they aren't one of my favorite brands), you'd end up with the 4-hybrid taking the 3-iron slot. On the other hand, if you go with Nike MachSpeed hybrids (far better than the Burners in my opinion), the one marked as a 3-replacement is the right loft.

I vote for the driver or woods bc technology impacted those clubs the most.  I played the G5 driver, and my 910D2 is longer and easier to hit straight.  Shafts are better too.
