Hey guys, I'm new to the forum, and fairly new to golf, and one issue I'm having is lining up to my target properly when first addressing the ball.  I find sometimes that my shot goes in a straight line, but 20 yards to the left on a club like my 6-iron (180 yards).  As I said, the ball flight is straight so I'm thinking that I'm just not lined up properly when I address the ball.  However, if I pay extra attention to where my club face is, I end up turning the face more than I adjust my stance, resulting in a slice, hook, or some other sort of atrocity that I try to pretend is a golf shot.

I'm just looking for a consistant, reliable way to make sure I'm aimed at my target right from when I first walk up to the ball, so I'm not playing around with my club face a bunch and then not rotating my stance enough.

Thanks!

First I'd check your swing plane...hitting a pull is a possibility if your swing is over the top.

But, for alignment you should stand behind the ball and pick your target..then bring your eyes back to the ball and find a spot pretty close to your ball that you can line up to.  this takes away a lot of the optical illusion you'll get at distance and helps to feel more confident in your line choice.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

Lay a rod (not a club because the curvature of the head affects your sense of alignment) on the ground pointed #1 meticulously perfectly (I say this because you need to convince yourself) at flags both near and far at the range.  Set up with your hips square and shoulders slightly open...only open enough to accommodate the right side lower than the left at address.  Turn just your head and look at the flag, then look at the rod.  Look at your feet too.  If you are like 99% of people in the world, you will say "There's no way that's the line."  Refer to #1 above.  Always fix alignment/vision issues before swing plane issues because the plane is affected by where you think you are swinging.

    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
    • No, but I spent (marginally) less time in the trees at Southern Pines, so it definitely played wider for me 😆. It definitely felt wider.
    • Have you measured? 🙂
    • I'm bad about taking pictures, but here are a few Hole 1 on Duke, looking toward the green. The elevated green with bunkers surrounding it was a theme. The other theme was pin placements that were tough - this one is pretty far left. There were basically no easy pins on this day.     Hole 3 at Pine Needles. An extremely cool hole. Hole 5 at Pine Needles. The picture doesn't do the green site justice. Green of 6 at Southern Pines. A wild green, and a really cool setting at the edge of the property: Hole  Tee shot on 5 at Tobacco Road. Flag is on the flag, the huge fairway is to the right. Hole 8 at Tobacco Road. Downhill, medium length par 3 with this pin in the front part of the green. Really cool looking shot. A look at the pin placement and cottage on Tobacco Road 14. I hit one of my best shots of the trip here, to about 15 feet.
    • Yes, but season 2 being all of six episodes is a bit of a let-down, even if the season itself wasn't.
