Hi All,

Just purchased a new set of irons that were fitted with Dynamic Gold Super Lites. I have now broken two of the shafts (7 and PW) right down at the hosel. Please note I JUST got them and have not even played with them yet. They each lasted for around 20 or 25 hits.

My clubbuilder is making things right, so I am confident they will fix this up. But I was wondering if anyone else has had issues with these shafts.

What's in my bag:
Driver : R7, 10.5 degree, stock stiff shaft
16 Degree Hybrid - Cobra Baffler DWS, with stiff stock shaft
20 Degree Hybrid - Cobra Baffler, with Accra Shaft, Stiff
26 Degree Hybrid - Cobra Baffler, with Accra Shaft, Stiff6 - PW - Bridgestone CG Mid, Dynamic Gold LiteWedges : TBA...

My son has them in a set of clubs and has been using them daily for a year or so with no problems whatsoever.

Keep in mind that the DG SL is a lightweight shaft so the walls of the shaft MUST be thinner than those in a normal weight DG. Before you fit a shaft in to an iron head you will usually rough up the tip a little bit with a sanding belt with a fine/medium fine grit so that the glue can adhere to it properly, it doesn't like sticking to smooth shiny chrome all that much. Possibly with the SL's being a thin wall type shaft your club builder has been a bit heavy handed with the roughing up of the tip and removed a bit too much material, just a guess.

Hi All,

How did they break if you haven't played them yet? Do you mean it just broke like that? Or was it on the driving range and you hit the mats instead of the ball? I can't figure it out how. What set of irons did you purchase? Did they come as stock shaft? Or have they been re-shafted in any way?

A friend of mine purchased a pre-owned set of X-Tour irons a week ago which came with Dynamic Gold Super Lite as well. He already has used it one round three days ago. This friend of mine hit things hard with golf clubs. Yesterday I was with him at driving range and they're still in one piece. I borrowed his iron and hit it several times, there's no sign of breaking at all. They're still solid. So, I don't think there's any problem with my friend's DG SL.
What's in the bag:
Driver: r7 SuperQuad 10.5° ~ UST Proforce V2 65g Regular
Wood: 906F4 18.5° ~ Aldila VS Proto 80g Stiff
Irons: MP-60 3-PW ~ True Temper Tour Concept S3
Wedges: Vokey Oil Can 252.08, SM56.10 & SM60.08Putter: Marxman Mallet 33"

They broke during practice session or as a result of them. The 7 was right at contact. I would like to think that this very experienced club builder would have the right instructions to build the clubs. Thanks for the replies, was just wondering if anyone else had any issues.

North49,

Are these shafts breaking, or are they simply slipping out of the hosel? Usually steel shafts like to break at or near the steps of the shaft, not at the tip section. It's entirely possible that he's simply received a bad batch of shafts from True Temper, it happens when you're making millions of shafts a year. I'd have him send them all back and try again. If it's just slipping out, he may have recieved a bad batch of epoxy. Again, it's another thing that sometimes happens which no one can control. Build enough clubs and it will happen to you at one point or another. It's very difficult to incorrectly prep the tip of a steel shaft, even an ultralight with thin walls, becuase it's steel. Unless he's fully grinding away at the material instead of simply roughing up the finish, he's doing alright.
