I am planning on getting new irons this spring and I am torn as to which set to get fitted for and purchase. I am currently a 16.3 handicap, but have been dropping consistently for the past 2 years and I expect to be around a 12 or 13 shortly based on my late scores last year (I have also been receiving instruction and practicing a lot more).

I know my game isn't ready for a set like a Titleist 735CM(although they do look sweet :D ), but I liked hitting both the Cleveland CG2's and the Ping I5's.

Can other members give me some advice on what club they would go with and if possible pluses and minuses of each club?

Thanks in advance

I have never hit the I5's, however, I have hit the CG2's numerous times. You can't feel them! If you hit it in the center of the club face the material is so soft that you don't feel anything at all. This is something that I don't like about the clubs personally but that may be what your looking for. They are long and straight, very workable but forgiving. But I prefered MP-32's and 67's to them.

Personally, I would go with the I5 irons although my reasoning might be considered to be faulty. Of the sets I've had, my favorite, by far, was a set of Ping Eye2+ irons; I replaced the Eye2+ set with Cleveland TA5 irons. For some reason, the Clevelands never gave me much satisfaction & I've replaced them with Callaway Steelhead X-14 Pro Series irons. I like the Callaways a lot more than I like the Clevelands, but not nearly as much as the Pings.

I don't mean to hijack someone else's thread but for those of you who have hit the CG2's, what kind of handicap should you be to use them? I currently have the TA5 and have looked at the CG2 but have always thought I'm not quite good enough to consistantly use them. But I see more and more mid handicappers hitting player's irons.

I had no problem with the CG2 and I'm the same handicap as you, I'm looking at the MP-32s later this summer.

No worries on the hijack :)

low to mid handicapper is what I have always been told and I found them to be a nice blend between forgiveness and workability.

as a 10 index you should be fine from what I have read and the pro suggested to me

Definately go with the I5s...That's what I've been playing since they came out last year. I'd been though just about every possible set imaginable and settled on the Pings. I ordered 5-PW and love them. You can custom order the grip size and lie angle. Ping will even bend your irons for you for free as often as you want, you just pay the shipping. Customer service was great, as I snapped a shaft and was sent a new one within 3 days.

    • I wonder if that is why my home course basically have no stakes now.  Not even markers.  It’s completely up to golfers to remember what is OB and hazard and how things used to be marked.     Even in tournaments, there is no marking and certain areas are played differently by different golfers who either don’t know better or use it to their advantage funny reading thru this with courses that actually have markers
    • is it though?????? "Millions of fans"?????
    • Great post, thanks for the informaiton. I try to avoid adding salt to anything I eat. I tend to add pepper on to my meals as opposed to salt. And I am trying to eat as clean on possible. On golf day, I eat 3 eggs for breakfast (pepper NO salt) and a salad for lunch, with grilled chicken thigs (pepper, garlic, no salt). I have been trying to avoid processed food, but we all slip. I also should have mentioned that the electrolyte packet calls for mixing with 16 oz of water, however I mix in 32 oz of water, so I dilute the electrolyte powder.
    • So if I read the news correctly, the PIF will not fund LIV after this season.  LIV is trying to find new funding and a number of players there are now asking about getting back to the Tour.    I am very, very concerned that Taylor Gooch will not have a place where he can make a jackass out of himself soon
    • It is a known technique, similar to the armed forces box technique. They use a 4x4 , in through the nose and out through the mouth. I use it to go to sleep fairly often. It works for me
