It wasn't closer from what I could see, and if it was then it was a terrible mistake by him and the rules official. He took an unplayable, after a long chat with the rules official in trying to get a dodgy free drop.

I was wondering that as well. His ball appeared to be nestled right up against the base of the wall, yet when he dropped he was on top of the wall with what would seem a much easier pitch shot than having to go over the wall.

two club lengths no closer -- wall doesn't matter any more than a tree.

[/quote] Right, I understand the rule. But if you saw the play, the wall somewhat followed the curve of the green. It looked like going over the wall would have been closer ton the hole. Obviously, this mustn't have been the case, as there were two officials there. I just wasn't sure if there was another rule allowed him to take a drop closer.

I agree that it sure looked closer from the TV perspective. I'd have never even thought to go on that side of the wall.
