My daughter just made the girls varsity golf team as a freshman, after beating the entire girls golf team by 4 shots.  I've been coaching her myself, and never really got to technical with her, other than basics:  grip, stance, alignment, aim, takeaway, etc..  never have been one to worry about things that normal instructors deal with.  Angles, Planes, Position, etc.

Anyway, her HS golf coach is trying to tell her she does not have enough hip turn, etc...  ala Paula Creamer, Gulbis, etc...  I do agree her hip turn is not full and is small compared to others, but she does have a good coil and fires thru the ball really well, as compared by her distance and ball striking.  Her body type (thick) just does not faciliate a big hip turn.  I've look at some comparable LPGA video and would compare her to Cristie Kerr, etc.

I told her this evening if the coach brings it up again, that for her to politely mention that maybe he could talk to me about it as she does not feel comfortable making swing changes without me.  I'm going to email him tomorrow, as he has mentioned to me he would like her to change an item, etc.. and I told him I would work on it with her.

Am I off base here?

Thanks for any feedback

I have run into similar frustrations with my son.  The teaching pro at our club likes to go up to him and give "tips" and I've have to basically just say this is what his instructor wants him to do and why.

I would contact the coach and just get more info, why do you want her to have more hip turn, what do you mean by hip turn etc.  If it comes then getting her to turn her hips more, the change is relatively easy, just make sure she loses flex in her right knee.  Here is a good model for her body type.  Erika(below) hits it great and pretty far, watch her right leg/knee on the backswing and how losing flex in the knee gets her hips to turn and turn on an incline plane

Not sure how "thick" were talking but if you want to see a thick girl with great hip turn try and find video of Caroline Hedwall. Especially video from the solheim. Her college videos are sloppy.

    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
    • No, but I spent (marginally) less time in the trees at Southern Pines, so it definitely played wider for me 😆. It definitely felt wider.
