If anybody on here says that they don't want to hit it longer, you would be lying through your teeth. Tiger, Phil, John Daly, Bubba Watson, Fred Funk, Jeff Maggert...EVERYBODY would like a few more yards.

I don't know if you've ever visited this site or know that it exists, but this is what the big boys do. Check out the ENTIRE site, especially the equipment part regarding heads and shafts that are typically used.

If you think that then you are badly mistaken. I have no need or desire for more length. I am as long as I need to be, and I strive more for accuracy. If you can make my drives 5 yards more accurate, then I will eagerly sacrifice 5 yards of length.

You are making the same assumption that the equiment marketers do, that we are all so stupid as to follow blindly where they lead. Unfortunately they are right all to often.... but you missed it here with me.

And how long are you?? (I think I'm about ready to hear a "big fish story") Do you play it back from the "tips" on every course you go to...or at least as far as they have the back markers set? Are you long enough to play a 7,400+ yard Augusta National? Yes, accuracy is important as well. I forgot to mention that those big boys are hitting in a grid between 45 to 55 yards max. Do you have any idea what that looks like at 350-400+ yards away?? If the answer is "YES" because you're already hitting it that far consistently...then you and I need to talk serious business. I already mentioned how to hit it more accurately. Go to the training aids thread that I started. Get an x-large...they seem to run smaller than the chest size indicates. Btw...since you're from Littleton...do you know or have you ever heard of a guy named Brad Neher?

I just happened to see this review right here on The Sand Trap. com

http://thesandtrap.com/equipment/clu..._driver_review

For those of you unfamiliar with this particular head since it isn't sold in retail stores or the company isn't paying the big bucks to PGA players to hit it, this IS one ROCKET LAUNCHING SUMB!TCH when fit with the correct shaft for your swing speed. It is REAL popular on the LDA and a good number of finalists in the Re/Max World Long Drive Championship, as shown on ESPN, use this head:

I agree that most want to hit the long ball. I might sacrifice minimal distance for straighter drives but ultimately I would always choose a 300+ yard drive that I had to gouge out of the rough.

Think about it, Tiger can go much longer than he already does but chooses not to because of the fact that his accuracy becomes much worse...so in a way he doesn't want to hit it much longer...I am at the point where I can hit most par 5's in 2 and I don't need to hit it longer, I can if I want, but what is the point when it becomes inaccurate?

Driving long way is the way to go for me. My game if driver sand wedge on most courses i play. When i get to a tougher course i might need to break out the PW or 9. 310 average on the courses i play. I tried some of those long drivers in competition and you need to practive alot with them to get them to go straight. But well worth it. Every once and a while i pull out the big dog at a scrabble and BOMB that 400 yarder. Its great to see people faces when you hit it. I Rarly use it for everday use though. Way to hard to control.

I would trade some length in my driver for more accuracy with my short irons.

I use the weighted "hittable" driver they advertise on TV for warm ups and it does increase distance. My Superquad feels like a feather after hitting a dozen or so with the weighted club.

I played the grip it and rip it game when I was in my 20s and its really hard to score consistently; its the birdie, par, double, birdie, double, and too often you get beat by the guy who's shorter, but straight and never in trouble.

I now only hit a driver off the tee on 4s and 5s and keep it in the fairway 90% of the time and I like it that way.

Very few touring pros use a driver with a length over 45". Now since most manfacturers make a standard driver 45 1/2 to 46 inches why is that? Obviously the longer shaft means longer drives. Touring pros use no more than 45 inch drivers for CONTROL. I will take a 280 yard drive down the middle and let you play 300 yards from the rough or out of bounds any day of the week.

I am always curious as to what equipment the pros are using. I read the "what's in the bag" sections but I can't find any real data on the length of the drivers shafts used by the pros. I searched the internet and did find minimal data from 4-5 years ago. Good article at

Here is one site from PING that gives you a lot of detail about their clubs: length of driver, iron shafts, number of tape wraps on putter, etc.

http://www.pinggolf.com/pingpros/ Tom Wishon's book on "The Search for the Perfect Driver" talks about how little an extra 1/2" in shaft length has to do with extra length off the tee.

Wow, thanks, the Ping site is setup great in terms of offering info on the pros and what they use. I wish you could see this same info on all pros and their equipment. I just think that it's fun to see. I notice that Ping has 19 pros listed and all but three of them have drivers listed at or over 45" long, Chris Stroud 47" WOW! Some of them don't give driver info, must be they don't play a Ping driver.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
