When I am taking a practice swing or two before a shot with my irons or wedges, I seem to have a real hard time hitting the ground. It seems i have to try extra hard to hit the dirt with the practice swings. Once I get a slight divot (really more of a feel of it) I get ready and hit the ball. Some are good some are thin and some are fat. Is there a psychological aspect to taking a good practice swing that I don't know about? Should I really be taking a divot of sorts with a practice swing?

Please tell me you aren't trying to take divots on practice swings. I used to work at a muni in high school (unpaid btw, just free golf) and almost got fired on my day off because a ranger saw me taking divots on my practice swings. He taught me about how much damage it did to the course and how long it took to heal. It's the equivalent of dragging your spikes across the green. Sure, it happens from time to time on accident for most weekend golfers but please, be kind to the course.

You should definitely NOT be taking divots with practice swings.

No to clarify, I do not try or intend to take a practice divot. What I do try to do and seem to have a hard time at is just brushing the grass or bumping the dirt with the sole of the club. I have a hard time taking a divot period unless I have hit it fat.

Was mentioned earlier in the thread.   If you are not making divots, you may want to see if you are flipping.   Once flipping is firmly embedded in your swing, it's hard to get rid of.    I used to take divots albeit small.   Once my flipping got worse, I made less divots.   I am now working hard to get rid of flipping and beginning to get bigger divots again.

Regardless of what ranger says, I am in favor of making the practice swing to be as close as my real swing.   But I make sure I fix my divots and others' as well.   I go through 4 - 6 cans of sand per round to fix a lot of divots left by others.

    • Contact is getting better. Swing path is still too inconsistent. Pushes and over draws. Sometimes some pull draws. I got to get this downswing path figured out.
    • I’m really glad he won now! From Golf Digest
    • It's really hard to argue against the Tiger Woods 2000 swing.  I like Rory's swing. And, I've always liked Joaquin Niemann's swing. Although, if I tried to mimic Niemann's swing I'd probably end up in traction for 2 months. I was kinda bummed when he went to LIV cuz I almost never see it anymore.  At the other extreme, I can't look at Bryson when he plays. Even if it's very effective, it's coyote-ugly to watch.  I'd rather watch Charles Barkley than Bryson. ....
    • Thank you for that information,I would have loved to see him in person
    • I think he was always kind of like that - he hit it off the planet relatively frequently throughout his career. I saw him play a couple of times. One time at Walton Heath in the European Open. He was playing the 13th on the Old (dogleg right par 5) and his drive had gone through the fairway and found a patch of grass in the woods there to the left (the woods have now gone). He had an opening to play back to the fairway. Maybe 25 yards to reach the fairway and 65 yards to run through the other side. He was maybe 230 yards away from the green, but the trees made sure that was not a viable option (at least that's what I thought at the time). He pulled out a pretty long iron - probably a 3 and gave it a full blooded thrash. I watched this ball come out straight for about 40 yards and then it just turned hard left, but stayed in the air (still not sure how he did that). He started the ball at a point that must have been 100 yards right of the green and hooked it basically that whole 100 yards and the ball wound up on the front of the green.  Shotmaking he was pretty much peerless. Not sure his swing was ever technically solid. Flowing and fun to watch yes, but not one you'd want to copy.  As to the question, I have heard a few people suggest that Mickey Wright had the best swing ever. Frank Nobilo had a pretty sweet looking one. Bruce Lietzke's was pretty cool - he managed to maintain PGA Tour playing rights with basically little to no work on his game - got to be a lot said for that.
