After getting myself down to a 9 handicap this summer and having the best mid iron game I've ever had I had to come to school and didn't play for roughly 1.5 months. I've been to the range now twice in the last 2 weeks and literally shanked every shot. I'm not talking like I hit a shot that was slightly off target... I mean I was hitting shots that started 30-45 degrees right of my target and then would continue to slice even further right EVERY SINGLE time. I spent an hour hitting a small bucket of balls just trying to work it out with no success.

I tried slowing things down, tried taking quarter, half, and even 1/4 swings, tried thinking about and changing my grip, stance, posture, nothing helped ... I can't even explain it. It didn't help that there was a hot girl from the CU d1 Womens golf team with an absolutely beautiful swing hitting balls right behind me.

Anyone experienced this?

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Never. When there is a beautiful woman on the range I do everything I can to make sure she is in front of me so I can watch her without turning around -- not behind me.

Regarding the shanks: It has been a while (thank goodness) and I never figured out what I was doing. Mine were more random but very frequent -- like ever third ball. I tried lots of stuff. Finally went to very very short chip shots. Worked on things like wrists and descending blows to try and focus on things other than face contact. Started lengthening those chips and working weight into the shot. Then jumped to drivers. Back to chips. Then 8-irons.

And like some goofy hiccup cure, the shanks were gone. When I shank one now, I ignore it. I do not try and figure out what I did wrong. I treat it the way I'd treat some bird coming and stealing my ball. Nothing I can do about it, no use blaming myself and not likely to happen again.

    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
    • No, but I spent (marginally) less time in the trees at Southern Pines, so it definitely played wider for me 😆. It definitely felt wider.
