Hi all,

Was practicing today with a TrackMan and a high-speed camera - and noticed a few things in my swing that I haven't noticed before:

The angle of the shaft at impact is way more steep than at address.

Then I googled a bit ( http://www.andrewricegolf.com/2010/11/shaft-angle-at-impact-ii/ ), and found that only a few players actually ends up at the same spot. But after looking at some videos, it seems like that most tour players typically lies within a few degrees regarding address/impact

I've posted a video of my swing here: http://vimeo.com/34741971

  1. The source of this seems to come at the top of the backswing where my wrists somehow turns the club a notch - I assume this should be avoided?
  2. Where are the elbows supposed to be at impact?
  3. Any good exercises to get the hips more rotated at impact?

Thanks,

Andreas

I don't agree with the premise of that article. Shaft angle among PGA Tour pros and better players is more a matter of how uncocked the wrists are at setup and impact. Set up with really cocked wrists at setup and you're highly unlikely to be a good ball striker returning to that same shaft angle.

Andrew seems to have missed my very basic point. I think I posted on the "part I" post in that discussion as well. I have video of Natalie Gulbis returning to the same shaft plane, and she's not known as a great ball striker. Not by a long shot.

You're not nearly as far off as you think. Your head pulls back a little and the wrists are more uncocked (partly due to the head and thus shoulders being farther from the ball, partly because that's normal).

BTW, your hips look okay to me. Probably not your top priority thing right now. Start a "My Swing" thread with some face-on video too if possible.

    • So close, that is frustrating.
    • You need to stick with one instructor as long as they’re not terrible. There’s no blueprint to improving a golf swing and different instructors may see different things as being more important and try to fix them. The end result is you get a hodge podge of things to work in that may not be cohesive or necessarily help you. If you stick to one instructor and communicate to them as such, they’ll also be able to work out a roadmap to your improvement which is more beneficial in the long run. If a guy assumes you’re just coming in for one lesson you might end up with a band aid.

    • Many thanks.  I read a lot of those posts.   Man, that is really deep.  As an old beginner, during a lesson or on the driving range, I have hit a good shot, you know pretty straight and it goes say 130 yards (7 iron).  The very next swing, I dig a ditch behind the ball.  I know I didn't do the same things on both swings.  Even this last lesson I had, I would hit a pretty good shot, not so on the next shot.  The instructor would quickly point out, "Hey you stayed on your back foot" or "Guess what happened there.  You got all armsy or handsy".  Sort of feels like I need a checklist when I prepare to swing each time.  I can see it now before every swing, "Hey can you guys give me 10 minutes while I run through my checklist".  In all seriousness, I see what you all are saying.  I wouldn't be overthinking it so much if just I could make decent contact most of the time.  Next lesson is about two weeks away.  Can't wait.
