Lately I have been getting into a habit of from the top of the backswing (which Im in good position) I have my lower body outrace my hands and I catch the ball off the toe. Is their any drills to help stop this?

Swing your arms down faster and try not to feel your weight shift at all. Film yourself doing that and see what it looks like. Is your miss a hook or over-draw (or a block)?

A hook is my miss and whenever I try what you said the problem gets worse

OK, do you have your swing on film? If so, try posting it here for feedback.

For future reference, here are the My Swing rules if you wanted to make a My Swing Thread. Also, you can't download videos from Swing Academy so that's not great either. And a face-on view would help too, as well as more frames.

Anyway, based on what we have to work with here....

It appears as if your swing is too long after impact, and you are slightly swinging too vertically to the finish with not enough re-hinging. The club wraps around your head and back as a result, which looks powerful, but really isn't.

Try swinging with a tee under each armpit and keeping those tees in to your finish. Try to feel like you are stopping your arms faster after impact, keeping them straighter, and re-hinging the club faster. That will get you to swing more on an arc around your body. On the DTL view, see if you can get the club to re-appear around where your left biceps is, well below the left shoulder.

Also, notice the trail foot in the example I gave? Try to make yours do the same, with your weight shifting more laterally, rather than letting the foot go up on its toe so quickly. Pushing your hips more forward will be what primarily helps this. It should also give you a bit more side-tilt which should help you stay with the shot longer.

Wish we could see more frames and a face-on angle as well as the video loaded up to Youtube instead of swing academy, but oh well. Also, the camera is too much to the right and that could be playing tricks on my eyes too. It should be more to the left, like behind you....

It's tough to help based on all these things.

Honestly, I'm starting to re-think my advice as I think the camera being too far to the right may have tricked my eyes into thinking the swing was too vertical through the finish.

However, the better hip slide and the right foot staying down longer certainly will help overall.

Why you're hitting it off the toe, I don't know. Honestly, the swing clip you provided is pretty poor. Only one angle, and it's too far right. No face-on. Not that many frames per second and Swing Academy isn't good.

Hopefully someone smarter than me will be able to respond and do better.

I thought it was overactive hips in the downswing and I will try and focus on keeping my right foot down longer. Thanks for the help!

Yea, check this thread out. Again, a face-on view would really help here since you said your lower body was out-racing your hands and that view is great to see that. It's hard to give quality advice based on that one swing clip you provided.

Check out these two videos about how to practice the right foot banking rather than rolling up on it's toe too:

In this video below you can practice like this, the right foot banking, the arms coming down faster, the arms swinging lower and more connected to your body, and then re-hinging. In slow-motion of course to get the sequencing down.

Nice job Jetfan and I agree.  I tend to do the same thing with the right foot and miss it a little off the toe.  When that right heel rises so fast, something a lot of juniors do, it inhibits the hips from going forward and changes how we approach the ball and can cause toe contact.

    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
