Hey guys, I injured my right wrist when I took a divot while playing in a tournament over the summer, and I tried giving it time to heal and strengthening it, but it still hurts when I swing a club... I have high school golf coming up in the spring and was wondering if you guys had any thoughts on what to do?

I hate to ask an obvious question, but did you go to a doctor and have it x-rayed and checked out?

I went to my doctor and talked to him, but I never got x-rays. He thought it was just like tightness in my wrist and he gave me stretches for my wrist, and they help but I have to keep doing them whenever I take a divot or something

You could have broken a bone, torn or stretched ligaments or tendons if it's still hurting from the summer.  I'd suggest you head back to your doctor or see a sports doctor who can verify you haven't done more damage than you thought.

You should go back to your doctor. Maybe he'll tell you to go to physical therapy or see a specialist. I'm not a doctor and I don't know the extent of the injury, so that's all I (and most other people on here, I assume) can say.

Have a doctor check it out to make sure it is not worse than you might think.  Once you have an answer, there are exercises you can do to strengthen your wrist.  I had a real problem when I first started golfing, to the point I could not really use my wrists for anything especially in bearing weight.  Over the course of a couple of months of wrist exercises using a stress ball and another device you squeeze between your palm and fingers, the issue largely disappeared.

Always changing:

Driver: Cobra S2/Nike VR Pro 10.5º

Irons: Callaway X-20 Tour 4-9i

Hybrid: Titleist 910H 19º & 21º

Wood: TaylorMade R11 3w

Putter: Odyssey White Hot

Wedges: Titleist Vokeys - 48º, 54º, 62º

First round: February 2011

An orthopedic specialist would be preferred. There are any number of things that you could have done, ranging from a simple sprain/strain to breaking one of your carpal (hand) bones. Fracturing a bone like the scaphoid or hamate could easily occur when taking a divot. These are small bones that typically do not heal well.  A xray would be needed, but sometimes small stress fractures may not show up.

Depending on the findings, he may send you to PT like another poster said, simply to work on ROM, strengthening, etc.

If it isn't a fracture of a carpal bone, sometimes those bones respond well to repositioning through manual techniques.

Hope that helps.

I was in the same situation. I was golfing, hit a divot on really hard ground and my right wrist was hurting a lot. It got real bad, to the point that I was staying up at night and vicidon didn't help. I went to my PCP (personal care physician) and had x-rays done. I work in a hospital and ran the floro on my wrist as well to see what's up. The dr's didn't find anything. While at work talking to a cardiologist, he referee me to another dr and low and brhold it was tenidinitus. (sp). He gave me a injection so I could get thru the season but wants to cut it open and fix the tendins now. Go to a ortho dr. Don't waste time seeing a regular PCP. Good luck.

    • Day 430 - 2025-12-04 Slow motion backswings (with chippy shots) with AlmostGolf balls.
    • Day 24 (4 Dec 25) - Spent about an hour working with the new 55° wedge in the backyard.  Kept all shots to under 20yds.  Big focus - not decelerating thru downswing and keeping speed up with abbreviated backswing.  Nothing like hitting a low flighted chip with plenty of check spin and then purpose to float a pitch of similar distance.
    • Day 114 12-4 Put some work in on backswing, moving the hips correctly, then feeling over to lead side. Didn't hit any balls was just focused on keeping flowy and moving better. I'll probably do another session tonight and add in some foam balls.
    • Didn't say anything about your understanding in my post.  Well, if you are not insisting on alignment with logic of the WHS, then no.  Try me/us. What do you want from us then?? You are not making sense. You come here and post in an open forum, question a system that is constructed with logic, without using any of your own and then give us a small window of your personal experience to support your narrative which at first sight does not makes sense.  I mean, if you are a point of swearing then I would suggest you cut your losses and humor a more gullible audience elsewhere. Good heavens.
    • I have access to far more data (including surveys and polls) than you do with your anecdotes. I mean this as plainly and literally as possible: you’ve demonstrated that you do not. They would, one way or the other.
