Is my grip too tight if I'm developing blisters occasionally?

Thanks,
Ryan

I am also getting blisters quite a lot, but never really thought of posting it up, so I would like to hear the responses too.

What kind of grips do you use? Cord grips or some other harder grip?

I've always wondered about blisters from swinging a club as I've never had one in 35 years of playing the game. Not sure if it's the club grips I use (I've always used softer rubber grips like GP Victory or Tour Velvet) or maybe I have a light grip on the club. I know I don't have particularly tough hands so I don't think that's it. I do keep my grips in immaculate condition though -- I like them fairly soft and almost tacky. With a light grip, the clubs don't turn or twist at impact at all but I can still feel how well I struck the ball.

I do have some friends that get blisters occasionally but they use harder grips and grip the club like they're strangling a cat...

An improper grip where your hand is not completely on the grip or holding the club to tightly can both cause blisters. If your blisters are towards the fingernail that is often to tight a grip. If they are closer to the palm maybe to loose or just a bad grip. If you hit a lot of balls hand cream is a must.

It could be from any of several things: how you grip the club, how hard you hold onto it, the grip the club has on it, the condition said grip is in, and whether or not you use a glove. I personally prefer not to use gloves if I can help it - I think I feel the ball better with my bare hands - but I was wearing down the skin on several spots on my left hand (I didn't blister, I just wore the layers down and had holes in my palm, basically) alongside a few rough spots - so I had to wear a glove.

I personally grip the club like there's no tomorrow (it helps me make a draw)...but I keep the grips in good shape, they're pretty soft. It all varies from person to person.

Location and which hand the blisters are on would tell more then just having them. Skin is different for everyone, some get them easier then others.

It could also be that you changed the way you grip the club recently and your skin just hasn't adjusted yet. It could also be as simple as your glove is too loose.

I know for myself, it seems to depend on how I swing the club. I've noticed that if I use a swing where I intentional use my hands in the swing, I may get blisters. If I use a body type swing where the hands just react to lower body initiation, I don't get blisters because my hands are much more passive. I should note that my blisters are contact between fingers and not between the fingers and the club grip.

How about if they are on the left thumb (right hand golfer)? I have got these for years and I just slap some tape on and call it good. But I always wondered what I was doing to cause this.

I noticed a small blister between my first nuckle on my index finger on my right hand and my palm this afternoon. I just assumed it was the new grips on my X20s as I've never noticed a blister before with my old '94 Big Berthas.

its normal, blisters happen all the time.. its just probably because the grips are new and still pretty grippy. Use the clubs alot and the grips will wear out and you wont get blisters as much.

    • Just listened to episode 8 - I really enjoyed this one. The vegetable analogy is great IMO. Candy is fun and gives you the instant high, but if you only eat candy you're not going to be feeling too good. Vegetables don't give you that instant high, but they keep you healthier and long term you'll feel much better.  For what it's worth, for me, sometimes I want something that is going to help me shoot a better score on Saturday and others I want to improve something about my swing that will make me better long term even if I struggle a little in the short term. It's up to me to communicate that with my coach.  Last comment - I would indeed share the hope that every lesson leaves the player "better" than they were on the way in. I would imagine if you have a good coach and good student, then the only time that doesn't happen is when you leave the lesson with it going so badly that you just revert to the old pattern.
    • After the Watson disaster, it really seems like the Browns are hedging their bets with quarterback now.  My guess is that Flacco is still seen as the old reliable that can play if need be, but they are just hoping one of the other three can separate himself. Somebody is going to be the odd man out by the time the season starts, so it makes for an easy daily storyline out of Berea come training camp. Still kind of thought that with the 2026 QB class so well thought of, building the other positions made more sense, but nobody is paying me to run a football team.
    • I think the initial red flag is having Deion second guessing every coaching decision. Blabbering in the media about his kid being under utilized and unable to shine.   I think the secondary fear is Deion wanting to coach and turning the team ownership and leadership into a chaos and a clown car! The more talking heads I had heard, have reported that Shedeur showed up for interviews unprepared and unserious. And that is not how a #1 draft acts. it would be 1 thing if he was the most talented QB who played at a top ten school. But he played in a lesser division and as someone else stated, had to score a lot just to win (9-4 & 4-8).

    • It sounds like it yes. But as you know, they come fast early. Then you get those three holes remaining…
