I am having trouble practicing and understanding one fundamental part of my backswing.  I understand I'm supposed to use my lower body on the backswing to push from left to right, while keeping my right leg calm on the backswing.  I am right handed.  I'm also supposed to rotate that direction while keeping my head straight.  My head is attached to my spine,  Without contorting my body so that I hold my neck still, how am I supposed to get proper hip turn, motion to the right and good body use backwards, while keeping my head still?  I need help understanding this part of the motion.  My marks below are in red.  I can either rotate my body (move my head) and get good lower body rotation (but my head moves) or I can keep my lower body still with no hip rotation but get good calm lower body, no head motion.  Help if you have any ideas just fundamentally understanding this part of the swing.  ANYTHING I can do at home to practice this would help me.  Rotating from left to right, keeping right leg calm, head still and yet moving all at the same time getting full rotation.

Top is good, bottom is bad.

I've never heard of using the lower body to push left to right in the backswing. Swinging the club, hands, and arms back while rotating your shoulders will give you your weight shift. You can rotate without moving sideways. Your head does not have to move backwards. Your head can turn/swivel to allow more shoulder turn. Also, you can let your right leg straighten a bit to allow more hip turn. Just don't let your right knee get over your right foot. Keep your weight, on the backswing on the inside of your right foot as illustrated in your pictures.

If you look at your picture on the bottom right you can see that you are moving way too far off the ball in your backswing.

Try to feel like you are staying more centered in your backswing and that will keep your head more still.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Try focusing on rotating your back to the target instead of pushing off with your left foot.  If you rotate fully, you will transfer your weight naturally to your right foot.  (note the weight at the end of your backswing should be on the arch/heel of your right foot.)

A full shoulder turn will also "open" your right hemi pelvis.  A stable right leg will ensure you keep your leg aligned properly (ankle - knee - hip in line) The shoulders rotating fully will rotate the hips to the idea position for the individual golfer.

Also a quick tip.  Try turning your head slight away from your target (toward your right shoulder) at address. It will feel easier to get a full turn with your upper body.

Here is a video lesson on the takeaway.  It very helpful.

    • Day 49 - 2024-11-18 Light day of HackMotion work in the basement with my putting. Suffice to say my feels very closely align with what is measured.
    • Day 200 (18 Nov 24) - Broke out the MacGregor blades to do some “vintage” club pitches and chips.  Focus was on alignment and where I am looking in relation to the ball…have been working on finding a focal point about 3-6 inches ahead of the ball (toward the target) and not staring at the ball.  Getting very predictable strikes.  Overall it was a fun drill session and will serve as a warmup to tomorrow’s planned front 9 walk with these irons and persimmon woods and of course a “new” putter - a Acushnet Bullseye…
    • TV ratings  continue to drop. Stop the endless wiggles and waggles.
    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.
