Need opinion on shaft

I'm a 16 handicap player with 95 mph swing speed. Just recently, I went to a custom fitter to get fitted on my driver shaft (TaylorMade R580XD 9.5 degree with MAS2 Stiff flex).

I tend to swing fast and my upswing is a bit too fast too. They recommended me for a heavier shaft (anything above 70 grams) with mid-high bendpoint. But I thought lighter shaft generate more swing speed and feel. So I'm not sure about his recommendation.

Do I re-shaft or stick with the stock shaft? What do you guys think?

Personally, I'd go with the club fitter's recommendation and re-shaft. Generalizations are all well and good (ie: "lighter shafts allow for higher clubhead speeds") but a good club fitter might see that because of your particular swing you hit the ball BETTER with a different shaft, even if it means a slight reduction in swing speed.

Another way to increase feel of the club head is by switching to a different weight grip. A lighter grip will make the head feel slightly heavier, vice-versa for a heavier grip. When I got my clubs fitted, this was explained in detail to me and it's why I went with the grips I did. And it turned out to be good advice.

I agree, stick with someone who has had a look at your swing. Ultralite shafts may help those with slower s/speeds to get get more distance but with your s/speed your'e probably better with something in the 70g range. My speed is really quite slow at 86 mph and I had a 55 g shaft fitted in a search for more distance. Didn't like the feel or response so put in a Fuji Tour Platform 26.3 R at 67g and a bit more torque and it works very well. Might also mention that I fitted

Feel Golf grips to my driver, 3 wood and putter recently and have been keeping the woods on much better line with these grips - and the putting has improved too !! Good Luck.

Did the clubfitter tell you why you should be using a heavier shaft?

95 mph isn't all that fast, it is faster then most but not what I would consider needing an equipment change to maximize or accomidate for, especially if you are hitting ok with your current driver.

What is your ball flight? Is it really high? The heavier shaft with a mid kick point can help to bring the ball down and make it flatter in the air. Also the heavier shafts usually resist torque better, so if you really go after one and toe it a little the ball isn't 2 fairways over.
