I'm looking for a new wedge or two to add to my bag.  Right now I only carry the PW and AW (45* and 50* respectfully) which came as part of my iron set.  I would like to add at least one more, but I'm not sure what kind to look at.  Maybe a similar jump in angle, like a 54* or 56*?  Or perhaps a less dramatic change is in order?  Also, what is a good starting point when it comes to looking for a wedge (brand, style etc...)?

What club do you use out of the sand currently? If you don't have a sand wedge I''d suggest you start there. A good sand wedge will help you not only out of bunkers but will give you lots of chipping options around the green as well pitches from about 85 yards and in.

Read this article about wedge bounce and grind. http://thesandtrap.com/b/bag_drop/wedge_bounce_and_grind_what_it_is_and_why_it_matters

I'd also go through Cleveland Golf's wedge fitting system which will give you some ideas based upon your style of play and course conditions. http://www.clevelandgolf.com/US_wedge_fitting_system.html

I used to use a matching PW, AW & SW's that match my irons.....

Last couple years I have played PowerBilt AFO irons & Callaway X-24 Hots.

I gamed the PowerBilt SW the best.

I also have the following in my locker.....

Founders Club 56*

Wilson R90 56*

Titleist Vockey 58*

Callaway Tour X Forged 56*

Currently I am using the Callaway to go with my Mizuno MP53's

I think that a sand wedge is probably the route I'll go. Two of the three courses I play on a regular basis are pretty light on the sand, but that seems like a pretty logical choice.

as 1puttit said, SW is a versatile club. Can use it for chips and shorter shots from near the green.

From your specs, if you have Callaway X20s, it's unlikely you can find a scarce SW from that model. You'll have to go outside.

Unless you live in an oasis, I imaging the Texas panhandle has some fairly firm soil. If this is the case and the sand is not super fluffy, you should probably go with a medium bounce (maybe 10*) in your SW. High-bounce wedges on hard soil can lead to ricochet skull shots from fairway or rough.

As for brands, there's plenty of never-been-hit wedges from a couple of years ago which can be had for $70 of less. And I'm talking name brand.

They are both part of my iron set. WUTiger, you hit the nail on the head as far as us not having the softest soil around. Where might you look for some of these wedges from past years?

Golf Galaxy, Golfsmith, Edwin Watts, Sports Authority...

All these outlets - at least in the Midwest - have quite a few wedges from a model year or two back. Callaway, Cleveland, Mizuno, Vokey, Adams - you name it. Of course, availability of particular models will vary according to what the local supply chain has left over.

If one of these stores doesn't have on hand what you want, they can search their regional database to see if their store in the next county has it.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
