Hey all,
Well, I live in Chicago, and sadly, the big wave of 17-year cycle cicadas are supposed to come this year. In fact, they are projected to come this Tuesday!!! I'm not sure if anyone has experienced Cicadas or knows something about them, but does anyone know if golfing during Cicada season is reasonable? Or are there just too many that they make it impossible? Thanks a ton.

It happened around Cincinnati in 2004--it really depends. If the golf course was built in the last 17 years (unlikely) then you should have little to no problem at all. Cicadas don't travel far, they typically find the nearest tree and begin climbing.

The problems I can see are on the putting green, however. You could move them all out of the line of putt, and in the time it would take to do that, more would crawl into the way. And, for God's sake dont hit your ball towards the base of a tree.

My grandma had them 17 years ago. They were all over the trees, but nowhere else, really. I don't suspect you'll have too much of a problem.

We had them a few years ago, but I don't remember them being a problem on the golf course. They would scare the wits out of my wife when they came bombing in buzzing to land on her. Other than that, no problem.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

They are supposed to begin coming tonight/tomorrow. School ends tomorrow. I pray we can still golf.

Remember the Memorial tournament in 2004. The course was loaded up with them. Didn't seem to effect the tournament too much.

They really don't bother you too much unless you start shaking tree limbs. Then they just climb all over you. Nohting to worry about really.

In '98 when we had them here, they were everywhere, not just around trees. It was pretty neat actually as long as you didn't get too squeamish about it. I would probably golf with them just to say I had.

The weird thing I remember about the cicadas was that everyone on the radio & tv had recipes for the things! Gotta draw the line somewhere, and mine is just before eating bugs.

As I was reading this, a story came on the news about them. It sounds like they are expected to be comming out this weekend in Southwestern Michigan. I will be on that side of the state, but don't know if they will be as far north as where I'm staying.
