So I just got a new pair of ping i3's, and took em out to the range to check them out. I know that it takes time to get used to them, but it seemed like with every iron, especially my 5 iron, i got way to under it while hitting off the tee. I hit all the irons pretty well on the mat, but when off the tee, I seemed to be shanking and popping them up. Do you guys think it'll just take time until I get used to hitting them off the tee, or is something wrong?

Thanks

If you are hitting off a turf mat with pre-set tees, chances are the tees were too high for your irons. How high were the tees? If the tees were 2-3 inches high (driver height) then I can see why pop ups and shanks would occur. I would stick to just hitting them off the mat, or find a tee that would place the ball just above the ground, like how you would normally tee up an iron during a round of golf.

So I went back to the range today and I got a shorter tee to use for my irons. It fixed my problem, and I seem to be hitting the irons pretty well now. Thanks

    • A few months ago, I scrubbed a bunch of grips with a wet towel (that was clean before I did this).  I should do that more often. I also am really not sure how to know when my grips are dirty enough to warrant cleaning, but I shower every day, so maybe it makes sense I should clean my grips after every round, or at least on a regular basis. And I'm really not sure how often I should replace them.  I still have the pure grips on my 5-iron through lob wedge, plus my fairway wood.  I installed those almost seven years ago, maybe it's time for new?  Maybe I wouldn't have to replace them as often if I kept them cleaner.  Hmm, I think this weekend I'll clean my grips.  I should find an authoritative source on how to do that, maybe the towel thing I described a minute ago isn't it.
    • Day 598 - 2026-05-22 Put my practice playlist on after a long day and got most of the way through it. 🙂
    • Day 56: golf day! Went and worked on short game for about an hour and a half, working on technique and then trying all types of shots. Then putted for about 45 minutes, working on speed and bead. Then went and worked on long game for a bit, mostly trying to fix my high toe ball with the driver. Finished up with playing a tough executive 9, and hit a lot of solid shots. Feeling pretty good!
    • PGA tournament broadcasts used to have tips segments they would play every so often. In one of them a pro showed us how to hit a driver off the deck. When the show returned to the announcing crew, Gary MCord said something like "I want all you amateurs out the promise yourself that you will never, ever, ever, ever, ever try to hit that shot."
    • In summer, I have a wet towel and wipe the grip on a particular club after a few shots with it.
