Advice on new iron set

Right now I am playing with Powerbilt irons, they are alright for a starter set, but I am really getting into golf right now. I am a college student, I'm 5 foot 11 and 200 pounds and I am looking into purchasing a brand new iron set. My max budget is about $600 and I want them to get fitted. I have a few sets in mind that have caught my eye, such as the Cleveland Pearl Black CG16 iron set, the new Cobra Amp iron set (Maximum Budget Range), the Calloway Diablo Edge Irons, the Cobra S3 Max irons. I have read every review i can possibly find on these clubs.

My question is, if anyone has hit them, whats your point of view on them.

I am looking for a forgiving set, it doesn't really have to be the longest club that is known to man, i am looking for a forgiving set that will give me straighter shots with better trajectory. Thank you for all the comments

Last Friday I was fitted and purchased the COBRA AMP driver + irons and I have to say…It was my best decision yet. I definitely hit them straighter then my old set. I went to the range on Sunday and I was hitting the back of the driving range (at Bent Creek Golf Course here in my city) and it's 300 yards. With a new driver and a slight grip improvement I gained almost 50 yards. It's been pretty awesome. Best of luck in your quest.

I just went through this same decision a few weeks ago.  I ended up selecting the CG16s because they made my final list and were offering a $200 instant rebate on an 8 club set.

Keep in mind that these clubs have stronger lofts than most.  My shop let me drop the 3 and 4 irons and substitute the CG16 wedges instead.  I am not sure that meets the rebate wording, but they were able to do it for me.  I already had 52 deg and 56 deg wedges in my bag, so I added the 48 deg and 60 deg to get to 8 clubs for the full rebate.  It worked out great for me.

To me, the modern lofts have made set configuration more difficult rather than easier.  The lofts with which i learned the game are so far in the past, however, that modern players would probably balk at them.  I think my original lofts were something like this;

5-wood.....23°

1-iron.......18°

2-iron.......21°

Obviously, one didn't bag them all at once.

These lofts may not be exactly right, but they're very close if not.   I don't think newer players would care for them, but I'd go back to them in a minute if they were an option.

I'm hitting the Callaway Diablo forged Edge and really like them. Don't forget about their (and other brands) preowned sites. You can save some money buying used. Of course having a fitted set is another matter.
